The 18-hectare campus is set on a gentle hillside bordered by Benowa and Ashmore Roads and Mediterranean Drive. The school has over 2000 students enrolled in Year 7 to 12. The school opened in 1980. The student body comes from suburbs with diverse socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Students from around 50 nationalities form a significant portion of the school community.
Available sports include volleyball, touch football, AFL, flag football and rugby. Benowa SHS participates in Gold Coast Sport Central (GCSC) cluster days across Terms 1 to 3 and competes against other local schools. Representative sport and trials are coordinated through the Director of Sport and include Broadwater district trials and South Coast regional events. Redback Sport provides extra-curricular sport opportunities, and in 2024 the year 11 Girls Volleyball team was National Champions, among other results. Venues for cluster sports span the Gold Coast, including Southport SHS, Runaway Bay, GC Sports & Leisure Centre, Miami SHS, Musgrave Mustangs Soccer Club, Pizzey Park and other venues.
The library is a dynamic 21st Century learning environment for implementing, enriching and supporting the school's teaching program. It aims to develop information literacy and ethical use of information and images, and to spark imagination through a love of literature. The Library is open 8:00am to 3:00pm every day. The library provides an online catalogue and research resources for students. Amazing resources include links to the Biodiversity Heritage Library, The British Museum and Free Art Books.
The school has approximately 40 clubs, councils and communities outside the academic curriculum. Sporting activities include basketball, E-sports, skipping, soccer, ultimate frisbee, volleyball, yoga, Zumba, running, mini-tennis, girls fitness, boys self-defence, girls self-defence, golf, surfing and ice skating. Cultural activities include AUSLAN, bagpiping, boardgames, crochet/knitting/sewing, jewelry making, painting/pottery, visual arts, debate, drone racing, culture club, gardening, Lego and poetry. Year 7-12 students can access teachers in the Collaboration Centre for homework and assignment support in English, Mathematics, Science and other subject areas (3:00–4:00pm on Mondays and Thursdays). Benowa State High School is a public secondary school on an 18‑hectare campus, with over 2,000 students in Years 7–12. Opened in 1980, it serves a diverse community drawn from 50 nationalities. The school delivers the Australian Curriculum with a bespoke framework, featuring Junior Secondary pathways and Senior Secondary program. Excellence Programs span Academic, Sport and Arts, including Academic STEM Excellence, Academic French Immersion Program (FIP), French Excellence, Dance Excellence, Drama Excellence, Music Excellence, Sports Excellence, Visual Art Excellence and Steiner Excellence; dual programs are available from 2026. Vocational Education offers certificates such as Barista and Hospitality, plus Visual Arts-Photography and Dance certificates. The campus includes a 21st‑century library and sport facilities; sport is coordinated with Gold Coast Sport Central and district events. Around 40 clubs operate across academic, cultural and wellbeing areas, with collaboration spaces to support study.
