The JSP is a full-time Japanese school recognized by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and privately approved by the Australian Federal Government and the Western Australia Government. The curriculum is aligned with MEXT's guidelines and runs elementary and middle school programs; graduates receive diplomas equivalent to those in Japan. The teaching staff includes both MEXT-dispatched teachers and locally hired teachers, and the school is governed by a School Management Council; funding comes from tuition, government subsidies, and donations. The school shares grounds with City Beach Primary School, with some classes and events conducted jointly.
Art gallery visits and related workshops are part of JSP's activities, including hands-on drawing sessions and guided tours that cover Aboriginal history. The program includes rich experiential learning through art-related activities and field experiences alongside other subjects. The small-school setting supports creative engagement within the Japanese curriculum.
The JSP connects Japanese education to the world with a curriculum aligned to MEXT's guidelines, taught in Japanese for elementary through middle school, while operating in a multicultural Australian context. Native English-speaking teachers deliver English instruction across all year groups, with small class sizes and proficiency-based grouping. The campus is shared with City Beach Primary School, enabling joint classes and events, and the school employs ACL (Australian Curriculum Learning) to teach Australian history, geography, politics and economics in English to foster cross-cultural understanding.
The JSP hosts a calendar of unique school events, including cross-country with City Beach Primary School and an Athletic Carnival featuring Japanese activities. There are family-friendly activities such as Sunday open classes and parent–child recreation, involving students, parents and staff. Students also participate in annual learning presentations, and a camp program runs in the Australian summer for Years 3 through 9 (2 nights, 3 days).
Because JSP is a small school, instruction emphasizes attention to individual learning needs and student life. The campus is located in a leafy suburb near City Beach, with opportunities for outdoor activity and physical education through events such as cross-country, the Athletic Carnival, and camps. The December camp for Years 3–9 provides an extended outdoor learning experience that supports social development and well-being.
