The Pre-school curriculum is bilingual (English/German) and designed to support early language development and everyday learning. It follows British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for Reception and KS1 guidelines for 3 to 6-year-olds. German is taught in a playful way, with German native-speaking staff supporting language learning. The program emphasizes holistic development across language, literacy and numeracy, social and emotional growth, and intercultural awareness, preparing children for entry into COLE Primary School.

Student Teacher Ratio

Pre-school groups are capped at 16 students, with two to three teaching staff.

Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Emotions and social relationships are a defined part of COLE Pre-school's educational areas. They include identity development, trust and well-being, cooperation and conflict culture. The curriculum supports children to express their feelings, develop self-awareness and self-confidence, and learn conflict resolution strategies. It also promotes stable relationships with caregivers and peers, and fosters social and communicative interaction in play.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

In COLE Pre-school, inclusion is a fundamental attitude; diversity is recognised as a resource and education is differentiated to meet individual needs. The educational concept emphasises inclusive pedagogy and language support to assist learners with different needs. The Pre-school is not suitable for children with severe physical and mental disabilities or major learning difficulties.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Working language is English with German as a second language. Language support and language proficiency assessment are essential parts of the educational work to assist children who do not speak English or German. Additional English and German native-speaking educators support language development and bridge to the lead teacher for children who do not speak English/German.

Mental Wellbeing

Emotions and social relationships include identity development, trust and well-being, cooperation and conflict culture. The curriculum supports expressing feelings, developing self-awareness and self-confidence, and learning to manage conflicts. It promotes stable relationships and social interaction, supporting the child's overall mental well-being within a holistic educational approach.

Safeguarding

Everyone is responsible for the safety, learning, and physical and mental well-being of all the children. This safeguarding emphasis sits within the educational concept and daily practice.
