Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

LFV was founded on 11 May 1946 by General Béthouart, High Commissioner of the French Republic in Austria, in temporary premises. Since its founding it has admitted both girls and boys, Austrians and French, and offered all-day classes with a school canteen. In Vienna under occupation, the first Cultural Agreement between Austria and France was signed on 15 March 1947, giving LFV a special status and a lasting legal basis for its operation and the approval of its studies. The 1952 agreement defined the equivalences between the Matura and the Baccalaureat and the respective proportions of Austrian and French education, a framework updated in 1960, 1962 and 1968 and abrogated by the current agreement dated 27 January 1983, which maintains the main thrust of the initial text. LFV moved to its current premises at the Palais Clam-Gallas on 8 May 1954, and in 2017–2018 the new Building F and Studio Molière were commissioned, with the Studio Molière opened to the public in 2019 and its new entrance inaugurated.

Community

LFV has active community networks, including the Parent Associations (APE — Association des Parents d'Élèves du LFV and UPel — Union des Parents d'Élèves du LFV), whose elected representatives participate in LFV commissions and governance. They also offer extracurricular activities in arts, games, culture and sports on Wednesday afternoons for pupils in the Maternelle and École Élémentaire, with enrollment and participation fees handled directly by the associations. The Alumni Association (ALFV) was created in 1958 as the Association des Anciens Élèves du Lycée Français de Vienne and, renamed ALFV in 2015, now counts more than 5,000 members worldwide and fosters ties between French and Austrian cultures and an international network. LFV also hosts musical activities such as the Orchestre LFM as part of life at school.

Parent-Teacher Association

LFV has two parent associations: APE — Association des Parents d'Élèves du LFV and UPel — Union des Parents d'Élèves du LFV; their elected representatives participate in LFV commissions. They provide extracurricular activities in arts, games, culture and sports on Wednesday afternoons for preschool and elementary students, with enrollment and participation fees handled directly through the associations.

Lycée Français de Vienne (LFV) is a French international school in Vienna and a member of the AEFE network. It serves students aged 3 to 18 and operates four schools in one: Maternelle, École élémentaire, Collège and Lycée, mirroring the French National Education System. The curriculum blends the French Ministry of Education framework for French lessons with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research curriculum for native German instruction. From nursery onward, pupils learn French and German, with English added from Year 5; English, Arabic and Spanish are also taught. LFV spans two campuses, Grinzinger and Liechtenstein, and offers extensive after‑school activities. It features libraries including the Kindergarten Library, the Bibliothèque Centre de Documentation (BCD) with over 20,000 books and 30 subscriptions, and the CDI for collège and lycée. A distinctive feature is Studio Molière (opened 2019) alongside the Palais Clam‑Gallas, LFV's premises since 1954. The school runs a wide range of clubs and participates in Vienna school championships.
