Extra-Curricular Activities

Clubs, activities, and opportunities to explore interests and passions

Academic and Intellectual

The school integrates sustainable development into the European Schools curricula. The school community includes students, teachers, assistants, management, and parents who are engaged with oceans topics. The two sites share the same ocean project. The school runs awareness events, interviews with oceanographers, meetings with authors, and exhibitions as part of the oceans project.

Arts and Creative

Artistic activities are linked to the oceans through exhibitions such as Trésors de la Mer du Nord (with WWF) and Galerie de l'océan (with Greenpeace). Pupils contribute to ocean-themed art projects and displays associated with the project, including exhibitions linked to World Ocean Day. A competition of recycled jellyfish mobiles engages pupils, families, and teachers. World Ocean Day activities feature artistic elements and displays.

Cultural and Language

This year the school aims to raise awareness among most students, regardless of age or language section, and to include families. The project involves both Berkendael and Uccle sites. Pupils from all language sections participate in ocean-related activities and events. The project uses interviews, conferences, and exhibitions to promote ocean awareness across languages.

Social and Hobbies

Pupils, families, and teachers are invited to participate in ocean-themed activities. Activities include the jellyfish mobiles competition at Berkendael, exhibitions, and video presentations related to the oceans project. The events foster collaboration across the school community and provide social engagement around ocean topics. World Ocean Day initiatives contribute to the social fabric of the school.

Community and Service

The project promotes citizen action toward the oceans. Exhibitions by WWF and Greenpeace illustrate ocean conservation concepts. The project is subsidized by the APEEE. The school is certified as a European Blue School and participates in European Maritime Day in My Country 2022.

Leadership and Professional

The school invites guest speakers such as Thomas Lesage, founder of Children for the Oceans. Volunteer classes meet with authors and oceanographers. Thomas Lesage was hosted at the Berkendael site and at Uccle to meet students, followed by an online conference with the school community. These activities develop leadership and professional skills through organizing events and engaging with external partners.

Lifestyle and Wellbeing

The kitchen team prepared a 'responsible ocean' meal featuring MSC-labeled fish for World Oceans Day. Canteen posters promote sustainable eating and ocean awareness. Pupils received a fabric top bag to reduce the use of plastic bags. Posters summarizing learning and actions from the project were displayed at the end of June 2022.

European School Brussels I is a European School operating on two campuses, Berkendael and Uccle, in Belgium, educating children from ages 4 to 18 across nursery to secondary. The school follows the European Schools curriculum and offers a bespoke curriculum aligned with the network's framework. Central to life at both sites is the Citizens of the Ocean World project: sustainable development is integrated into teaching, and all language sections participate in ocean-focused activities, exhibitions, and events. As a European Blue School, the school joined the European Blue School network and took part in European Maritime Day in My Country 2022. The two campuses run the same program, including World Oceans Day activities, talks by ocean advocates, and exhibitions such as WWF's Trésors de la Mer du Nord and Greenpeace's Galerie de l'océan. Extracurriculars and arts are ocean-themed, with jellyfish mobiles and family involvement, funding provided by APEEE. World Oceans Day.
