Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

Community

The two sites share the same ocean-focused project and invite participation from pupils, families, teachers, and staff. The school joined the network of European blue schools last academic year, launching an awareness project on the Berkendael site. This year's activities are designed to engage most students and include families, with events, exhibitions, and guest talks across language sections. Planned activities include the April 2022 launch event 'Here begins the sea,' an interview with Thomas Lesage, meetings with authors and oceanographers, a jellyfish mobiles competition, and exhibitions by WWF and Greenpeace, culminating in a World Oceans Day conference and related online events on June 7–8, 2022.

Parent-Teacher Association

APEEE is the voice of parents for Brussels European School I. APEEE Services provide canteen, transport, and after-school activities. The ocean-awareness project is funded by APEEE, illustrating parent involvement in school projects. APEEE operates at both Berkendael and Uccle sites to support pupil welfare and activities. Parent participation is encouraged through APEEE initiatives and services.

European School Brussels I is a European School operating on two campuses, Berkendael and Uccle, in Belgium, educating children from ages 4 to 18 across nursery to secondary. The school follows the European Schools curriculum and offers a bespoke curriculum aligned with the network's framework. Central to life at both sites is the Citizens of the Ocean World project: sustainable development is integrated into teaching, and all language sections participate in ocean-focused activities, exhibitions, and events. As a European Blue School, the school joined the European Blue School network and took part in European Maritime Day in My Country 2022. The two campuses run the same program, including World Oceans Day activities, talks by ocean advocates, and exhibitions such as WWF's Trésors de la Mer du Nord and Greenpeace's Galerie de l'océan. Extracurriculars and arts are ocean-themed, with jellyfish mobiles and family involvement, funding provided by APEEE. World Oceans Day.
