The UK Curriculum provides a continuous learning framework from preschool to 18, allowing adaptation to reflect students' prior learning experiences and offering transferability across international schools. The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) offers student-led, enquiry-based learning within relevant, practical contexts and fosters international mindedness. In Primary, English and Mathematics follow the UK Curriculum while IPC projects develop collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking through integrated units. IPC Personal Goals—enquiry, resilience, morality, communication, thoughtfulness, cooperation, respect and adaptability—are embedded in learning.
Music plays a crucial role in ISL's curriculum. A specialist music teacher leads the program, and private piano lessons are offered. Students participate in class events and small concerts as part of the music program.
Dutch is taught to all Preschool and Primary students with differentiated instruction to match ability, supporting integration into the local community; a Bibliobus monthly library visit supports reading. French is taught to students in Grades 5 and 6. An Additional English Support (EAL) program helps students arriving with little or no English access the main teaching curriculum.
Physical Education is an essential part of ISL, with swimming lessons provided throughout the year for students from Preschool 2 up to Grade 6 to build water confidence and basic strokes. After School Care is available from 15:30 to 17:30. Extra-Curricular Clubs are offered as optional activities, with fees of €5–€7 per session.
ISL works with the European Solidarity Corps, welcoming volunteers and supporting a European project to build a more inclusive society. The school offers internships under Erasmus and provides opportunities for volunteering and student involvement in international projects.
The Head of School is Carol. The ISL team includes Preschool and Primary teachers, as well as specialist staff such as a PE/EAL teacher, a Dutch/French teacher, an EAL teacher and a Music teacher, along with administrative leadership. The school invites teachers and interns, and maintains opportunities for volunteering, internships and Erasmus-related collaboration.
ISL aims to provide a safe, joyful learning environment that supports independent, creative and reflective problem-solving. The mission emphasizes intercultural understanding and respect for diversity. The Early Years focus on a family-like atmosphere and hands-on, play-based learning to develop social and emotional growth.
International School of Leuven (ISL) is an international day school founded in 2013 by IMEC, VIB, KU Leuven and Stad Leuven to meet Leuven's growing international community. The school offers the British Curriculum alongside the IPC across Early Years and Primary, with ages 2 to 12. English and Mathematics follow the UK framework, while IPC projects develop collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking. IPC Personal Goals—enquiry, resilience, morality, communication, thoughtfulness, cooperation, respect and adaptability—are embedded in learning. Dutch is taught to all Preschool and Primary students, with French offered in Grades 5 and 6; an Additional English Support (EAL) helps learners arriving with limited English. Specialist subjects include Physical Education and Music, with swimming provided from Preschool 2 to Grade 6. A recent move to a brand-new permanent site in Heverlee makes the school easily reachable by public transport and motorway access. ISL also engages in European projects and Erasmus.
