ISL provides a safe, child-centered learning environment that supports emotional and social development. In Early Years, the school emphasises that children flourish emotionally, socially and academically. Personal growth is highlighted in the IPC with eight Personal Goals—enquiry, resilience, morality, communication, thoughtfulness, cooperation, respect and adaptability—built into learning tasks. The curriculum promotes collaboration, communication and empathy as core skills across age groups. The language programme also supports intercultural understanding and social communication to bridge cultures and barriers.
ISL is an inclusive school with a strong ethos of differentiated learning within classes. Special Educational Needs that fall outside class differentiation are addressed on an individual basis. Your child's needs are supported through an Individual Action Plan when appropriate, with monitoring and regular discussions with parents. The school is happy to work collaboratively with external specialists to support a child.
Additional English Support (EAL) is provided for children arriving with little or no English. Specialist classes support social integration and access to the main teaching curriculum. Classes are delivered individually or in small groups with a focus on daily vocabulary and self-expression. An EAL Teacher is part of the ISL team.
International School of Leuven (ISL) is an international day school founded in 2013 by IMEC, VIB, KU Leuven and Stad Leuven to meet Leuven's growing international community. The school offers the British Curriculum alongside the IPC across Early Years and Primary, with ages 2 to 12. English and Mathematics follow the UK framework, while IPC projects develop collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking. IPC Personal Goals—enquiry, resilience, morality, communication, thoughtfulness, cooperation, respect and adaptability—are embedded in learning. Dutch is taught to all Preschool and Primary students, with French offered in Grades 5 and 6; an Additional English Support (EAL) helps learners arriving with limited English. Specialist subjects include Physical Education and Music, with swimming provided from Preschool 2 to Grade 6. A recent move to a brand-new permanent site in Heverlee makes the school easily reachable by public transport and motorway access. ISL also engages in European projects and Erasmus.
