AVA was founded in 1958 as a boarding school for the children of missionaries on land purchased by Wycliffe and the Un- Evangelized Field Missions of Great Britain and North America (UFM). It is the only English-language international school in Pará and sits near the mouth of the Amazon River outside Belém. In 1999 AVA became an open enrollment international school operated by the Network of International Christian Schools (NICS). In 2014, NICS turned AVA over to Believer's Bridge, and in July 2019 Word of Life Brazil North became the overseer of AVA. The campus is just north of BR316 and is easily accessible by public transportation.
AVA hosts events and activities that involve students and families, including Balloon Car Grand Prix, Natal dos Ribeirinhos, Reading Contest 2025, Family Day, and Student Council Elections. The site also features posts about school events and leadership activities such as School Director Conferences, indicating an active school community.
