Founded in 1916 by a group of German residents in São Paulo, Colégio Humboldt began as a German-language school and became a cultural hub for the German community in Santo Amaro. It opened on May 1, 1916, closed in 1917 during World War I, and reopened in 1921, growing to 100 students by 1931. After WWII the school was restored, was renamed Colégio Humboldt in 1966, and moved to a new Interlagos campus with first classes in 1999; the Teatro Humboldt opened in 2003 and the gymnasium in 2005. Today it offers bilingual education with Brazilian and German diplomas, including the Abitur and the Dual Vocational Training program, and is officially recognized by Germany as a Deutsche Auslandsschule, receiving the Excellent German Auslandsschule seal in 2022. The centennial in 2016 celebrated the school's roots and ongoing development.

SEBRB is the Sociedade Escolar Barão do Rio Branco, the school's broader parent-teacher community that participates in governance and school activities. Grupo de Gestão para o Desenvolvimento Escolar is an elected body comprised of members from the school community — including representatives from the administration, parents, students, teachers, and Brazilian and German leadership — that coordinates school development and policy.
