Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The history of Lycée Français François Mitterrand begins in 1973, shortly after the French Embassy moved from Rio de Janeiro to Brasília. The French school in Brasília started in rented facilities at Colégio Santa Rosa in L2 Sul, then moved to Nossa Senhora do Rosário and, in 1978, to rented facilities at a private university (AEUDF). In 1980 the lycée moved to its own premises in Asa Sul, built to Oscar Niemeyer's design; the project was financed by the French government, but the building was purchased by the Franco-Brazilian Cultural Association (Alliance Française) and opened in 1980 by Olivier Stirn, then Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. A tile installation by Athos Bulcão was created for the high school facilities by Niemeyer. In 1986 the Association of Parents of Students (APE) contributed to building an administrative facility and became responsible for management; the student body hovered around 350 and the first BAC session was held in June 1996. In 1996 the establishment was officially named Lycée Français François Mitterrand, with Danielle Mitterrand in attendance. The 2008 milestone saw the launch of a new campus through a French government–APE partnership. In 2013 François Hollande inaugurated the beginning of the works, and on March 15, 2016 the new Lycée Français François Mitterrand opened, designed to accommodate up to 800 students. Since 2016, the school has continued to evolve, renewing itself to offer a high‑quality educational experience aligned with contemporary values and challenges.

Parent-Teacher Association

Lycée Français François Mitterrand is a private institution with agreements with the French State through the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE). The Association of Parents of Students (APE) is responsible for the management and is legally responsible; the AEFE and the APE are linked by an agreement. The APE Management Committee votes on the budget and monitors its implementation. The Establishment Council represents the pedagogical functioning and life of the establishment. The main bodies are AEFE, APE, and the Management Committee. AEFE provides salaries for expatriate staff, grants for projects, staff training, and scholarships for French students. The APE is the private-law managing body and employer of all locally hired staff; pedagogical management is not the responsibility of the APE, which intervenes through its financial and human resources. The Management Committee comprises fourteen members, five from the APE (including the president and the treasurer) and the remaining ten representing the Embassy, the lycée management, teachers, and French associations abroad. The Establishment Council, the School Council (Primary) and the Secondary Council guide governance and meet regularly; minutes of meetings can be consulted on the Eduka platform.
