Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Chung Hwa Middle School, Bandar Seri Begawan was founded in 1922 by Ong Boon Pang and associates, evolving from the York Choi School established in 1918. Secondary education began in 1955 and the school was renamed Chung Hwa Middle School as its program expanded; government subsidies started in 1957 to support renovations and staff wages. The 50th anniversary was celebrated in 1972 with royal attendance, and the 60th anniversary in 1982 was attended by Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, marking ongoing expansion and modernization, including ICT initiatives in the late 1980s. The Chung Hwa Middle School Legacy Hall was launched in 2002 and the Lim Teck Hoo Building completed in 2008, with the primary section adopting a new education method for Chinese language in 2011. The school marked its 90th anniversary in 2012 with cabinet officials and the royal family present, and celebrated its centenary in 2022, with the Sultan awarding long-service medals to board members and student performances."

Community

CHMS BSB is Brunei's largest and oldest Chinese private school. Major anniversaries and royal visits reflect the school's community ties, including the 90th anniversary in 2012 with cabinet officials and the Sultan. The centenary celebrations in 2022 were attended by His Majesty and other royals, illustrating the close relationship between the school and Brunei leadership. The Alumni Education Fund, established in 1986, supports continued progress in student learning and school programs."

Parent-Teacher Association

The school is governed by a Board of Directors together with permanent honorary advisers, forming the central governance structure for CHMS BSB. Parent and community involvement is channeled through this governance framework, with the Chinese community contributing to school development. A notable community fundraising event was the 100th anniversary walkathon in October 2022, which raised over BND 200,000 for the school, with a further BND 100,000 donated by the board chair. The centennial celebration in 2022 was attended by His Majesty and other royals, and long-service medals were awarded to board members during the event. The Alumni Education Fund (established in 1986) and infrastructure projects like the Legacy Hall (launched 2002) and Lim Teck Hoo Building (completed 2008) illustrate ongoing community support for students and facilities."
