BASIS International School Shenzhen opened in 2015 as the first BASIS International School in China and the network's first overseas campus. It began in Shekou (Net Valley, Nanshan) with several hundred students and expanded to a full PreK–12 offering over the following years. The school is part of the BASIS Curriculum Schools network (the BASIS international / overseas operations that trace back to the founders Michael and Olga Block) and operates within that group's international school structure. In 2023 the campus moved to a new, purpose-built facility with additional classrooms, labs, performance spaces, and sports facilities.
The school serves a multicultural student body and participates regularly in network and regional activities such as the BASIS International & Bilingual Schools China Athletic League (BIBS • CAL) and the network's speech & debate events, which bring together students from multiple BASIS campuses. Students also take part in external academic competitions (the network has reported qualifiers for events such as the World Scholar's Cup). The campus facilities (auditorium, theater, gymnasia, observatory and labs) are used for concerts, cultural fairs, athletic meets, and other community events that involve families and visiting schools.
BASIS network guidance and school communications indicate an active parent community; early-years guidance notes that parents are engaged in school life while campuses typically maintain a controlled access policy for classroom environments. Parent groups across the BASIS network commonly organize or support family events, classroom volunteering, parent-education workshops, and hospitality for open houses; at Shenzhen, parents have been visible as spectators and volunteers at network tournaments hosted on campus. Examples from the wider BASIS network include family teas and holiday/seasonal celebrations run with parent participation, and parents also assist with grade-level and schoolwide events. The exact PTA structure, elected officers, meeting cadence, and event calendar at the Shenzhen campus can change year to year; for the most current list of officers or to join volunteer efforts, please contact the school office or admissions team.
