Extra-Curricular Activities

Clubs, activities, and opportunities to explore interests and passions

Academic and Intellectual

Shanghai Japanese School's upper grades engage in academically oriented extracurricular activities, including international competitions and cross-disciplinary projects. The school emphasizes inquiry-based learning and international understanding, with dedicated time for students to identify questions that cross subject boundaries and to present their research findings. An English-language film project, SJHS Oscar, has students handle production aspects from concept to screening, fostering collaboration, creativity, and presentation skills. The curriculum is supported by ICT-enabled instruction and language development to facilitate research and communication across disciplines.

Arts and Creative

Arts and creative activities include Art Club, Light Music Club (band), Photography Club, Dance Club and Handicrafts Club. These cultural groups regularly rehearse and perform at school events such as the Wutong Festival. The Light Music Club sometimes collaborate with students from other schools for joint concerts. The culture and performing arts programs provide opportunities to showcase talents during campus events.

Cultural and Language

The school conducts active international exchanges, including an International Summer Camp with Shanghai Industrial and Foreign Language School and an International Youth Camp organized by the Shanghai Association for Friendship, enabling cross-cultural interaction. Students also participate in a language and culture immersion program at local Shanghai universities for a week to study Chinese language and culture. Mock United Nations activities and other international projects are part of the broader international engagement.

Social and Hobbies

Social and hobby opportunities include a range of sport and culture clubs. Sports offerings cover soccer, tennis, baseball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, basketball and track, with after-school and practice sessions organized by season. Cultural clubs mirror the arts offerings, and student activities extend beyond clubs to performances at school events and class-wide gatherings.

Community and Service

Volunteer opportunities are integrated into school life, with students taking part in Shanghai events and community activities. Volunteering includes charity bazaars, book sales, reading to younger children, and assisting with events hosted by visiting Japanese artists, providing real-world contexts to use language skills and engage with the local community.

Leadership and Professional

Student leadership is organized through formal bodies such as the Student Council Executive Committee, Sports Promotion Committee, HR Committee, Beautification Committee, Library/PR Committee, and International Culture Committee. These groups meet regularly, coordinate events, and take on responsibilities from planning to execution, giving students hands-on experience in leadership, teamwork, and project management. Examples of activities include student elections, festival planning, event announcements, and cultural outreach.

Lifestyle and Wellbeing

Wellbeing is supported by a broad range of extracurricular sports and physical activities after school. The school promotes fitness and teamwork through clubs such as soccer, tennis, baseball, volleyball, table tennis, badminton, basketball and track, with regular practices and participation in inter-school events like Magic3 basketball tournaments.
