Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The Shanghai Japanese School was established on April 22, 1987, by the Shanghai Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry and is operated by the Shanghai Japanese School Management Committee. The school runs two campuses on opposite sides of the Huangpu River: the Hongqiao Campus in Minhang District (west of the river) and the Pudong Campus in Pudong New Area (east of the river). The Hongqiao Campus spans about 20,000 square meters in a quiet residential area near the Japanese consulate and features facilities such as a natural turf ground, two gymnasia, a heated pool, and a biotope courtyard. The Pudong Campus also covers about 20,000 square meters and offers a heated pool, two large gymnasia, a martial arts hall, and a library of about 35,000 volumes; the Senior High School component is located on the Pudong campus and opened in 2011, making it the first high school on a Japanese international school campus. Since Pudong's opening in 2006, the middle school relocated to Pudong, and as of 2025 the Hongqiao Campus serves elementary grades only. All campuses host teachers who are Japanese citizens and provide a senior high school option on the Pudong campus.

Community

The Hongqiao Campus sits in a quiet, residential area near the Japanese consulate, while the Pudong Campus lies in a dynamic inner-city district near Century Park. Both campuses offer substantial learning spaces (about 20,000 square meters) and extensive facilities such as pools, gymnasia, and libraries. The school's annual calendar includes a broad slate of events, entrance and opening ceremonies, class meetings, field trips, overnight programs and the Chinese–Japanese Speech Contest. Along with traditional ceremonies like graduations and learning presentations. Open-house style events, including all-school visitation days where parents observe classes, are part of the school's community-building activities and reflect active parental engagement with teachers and students. The Hongqiao Campus emphasizes elementary education, while the Pudong Campus hosts elementary through junior high and, on its site, the senior high school component; the school operates with Japanese-citizen teachers across both campuses and maintains ongoing ties to Shanghai's Japanese community and diplomatic representatives.

Parent-Teacher Association

The Hongqiao Campus has a visible PTA component, the school notes PTA involvement by describing PTA-approved sportswear, including a Shanghai Japanese School T-shirt, shorts, and a jacket used by students. This PTA-linked gear indicates formal collaboration between parents and the school on student activities and school identity. Parental participation is also evident in school events such as all-school visitation days, where parents attend and observe classes alongside students.
