Mandarin Chinese is the non-English language explicitly described and is taught as a core subject from pre-nursery through Year 9, with optional Mandarin for IGCSE/A level in Years 10–13. English is the language of instruction across the curriculum. The school provides separate lessons for native and non-native Mandarin speakers, with Mandarin specialists to support different language levels. Chinese culture is integrated into the program through culture weeks, trips, drama, and related activities.
The College operates an English-language curriculum with Mandarin taught in a bilingual context. Mandarin is taught daily by Mandarin specialist teachers and adapted for both native and non-native speakers. It is a compulsory subject for pupils from pre-nursery through Year 9 and is optional in Years 10–13 for IGCSE and A level.
Mandarin immersion is supported through the Nest program, which provides a fully bilingual environment for language learning. The Mandarin program includes weekly Chinese culture lessons and a range of cultural activities, such as culture weeks, trips, drama, and Mandarin after-school activities, to deepen language and cultural understanding.
Wellington College International Tianjin is an all-through British international school established in 2011 on a 35,000 m2 campus in the Hongqiao District of Tianjin. The campus opened in August 2011, following construction that began in September 2009. The College serves pupils aged 2–18 and offers the British curriculum from Early Years through to IGCSE (Years 10–11) and the A Level programme in the International Curriculum Centre. Mandarin is taught as a core subject across the curriculum, with a dedicated Mandarin department, and the Early Years programme combines the British EYFS with Chinese curriculum elements in a bilingual setting. English is used as daily language of communication and instruction, with English as a language of instruction for most subjects and Mandarin taught throughout the school.
