Founded in 2011, Wellington College International Tianjin was the first overseas partner school of Wellington College in the UK. It forms part of the Wellington College Education (China) network, established to extend the Wellington model of holistic, values-based education with a degree of autonomy in China. The school's opening marked the network's initial expansion, followed by Wellington College International Shanghai in 2014 and Hiba Academy Shanghai in 2018. The group continued to grow with the launch of Hiba Academy Nantong in 2022 and plans for Hiba Academy Bay Area in Fall 2026, illustrating the bicultural education model across multiple campuses.
The Wellington College Tianjin community includes pupils, families, alumni, teachers and staff who participate in regular events and cultural activities. Friends of Wellington (FOW) is the parent group that represents Wellington College Tianjin's parents, meeting regularly and supporting family-focused activities. Parents are kept informed through ongoing communications, and there are opportunities to contribute to school life through volunteering and collaboration with staff for events. The school hosts annual charity fairs and other community occasions, featuring performances, food, games and vendor stalls to bring the community together and support local causes.

The PTA oversees major community events such as the Winter and Summer Charity Fairs, which include sponsorships, vendor stalls, performances and activities. These fairs raise funds for local charities, with examples including the Peizhi School in Hongqiao District and larger community participation that has drawn more than 1,500 attendees in recent years.
