Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Wuhan Yangtze International School began in 2003 as South Lake International School in the Wuchang district, opening with seven students. It obtained a Foreign Expat Children's School license from China's Ministry of Education in January 2011. Construction on a purpose-built campus started in 2012 and the school moved to its current Boxue Road campus in January 2014. The school now operates as part of the LifePlus international‑school network, which is identified on the school's website.

Community

WYIS presents itself as a multinational Pre‑K–12 community with students from 20+ countries and, in recent reporting, serving roughly 260 students. The school's calendar and newsletters show regular cultural events—most notably an annual International Day—and larger community milestones such as a 20‑year anniversary celebration that include performances, food stalls and cultural displays. Ongoing parent‑facing communications (the school newsletter, campus announcements and the Buffalo Goods information) and after‑school campus use create regular, informal opportunities for families to connect with staff and one another.

Parent-Teacher Association

WYIS does not publish a formal, named Parent–Teacher Association on its public website; instead, parent engagement is handled through school‑run structures and events. The school schedules regular Parent‑Teacher Conferences (PTC) and Student‑Led Conferences (SLCs) for one‑to‑one meetings between families and teachers, with registration and instructions posted through PowerSchool and the Buffalo Weekly newsletter. The school also runs parent workshops (examples shown include sessions on Canvas and on supporting student leadership) that are often timed with conference days. Families are invited to participate in volunteer and fundraising activities (for example joint campus fundraisers and community telethons) and are kept informed via the school's weekly newsletters. For prospective or current parents the school's newsletters and admissions pages are the primary places to find sign‑ups, schedules and volunteer opportunities.
