Kalundborg Municipality established ISK to accommodate the influx of international residents. The municipality decided in October 2024 to establish an international public school. The school will be located in Kalundborg, closely connected to Herredsåsen School to utilize existing facilities and will operate under the law governing municipal international schools (KIG Law). The school will offer a bilingual program certified by Cambridge, requiring staff to be proficient in English. The initial intake will begin in August 2025 with grades 0–7, expanding to grade 8 in 2026 and grade 9 in 2027.
ISK will be housed in Herredsåsen with shared facilities including a library, cafeteria, science labs, art spaces, a makerspace, and sports facilities. Students will have access to Spiralen movement house and a nearby public swimming pool for Grade 4 swimming lessons, with recess between ISK spaces and outdoor areas. Kalundborg offers parks, beaches, and cultural activities that support family life and community engagement, including local clubs and institutions such as Kalundborg Music School and UngKalundborg. These connections help integrate international families into the local community.
