Danish and English are the languages of instruction at Lolland International School. Instruction is bilingual across the curriculum, with English and Danish used in different subjects. Spring School and the transition to Grade 0 occur in a bilingual setting with daily activities in Danish, English, or both.
Lolland International School follows a dual-curricula, dual-immersion, bilingual program. Half of student subjects are taught in English and the other half in Danish. This approach aligns with research on bilingual education, showing bilingual students attain the same levels of achievement in mathematics and science as monolingual peers while acquiring an additional language.
Dual-immersion is central to the school's language model. Large portions of the day are conducted in Danish, English, or both. Spring School introduces two languages to children ahead of Grade 0 to ease their transition into a bilingual environment. This immersion approach supports language development and cognitive flexibility.
Lolland International School is an international folkeskole in Maribo, Denmark, serving ages 5 to 15. It runs a bilingual dual-curriculum, with half the subjects in English and half in Danish, drawing on international and Danish curricula. Cambridge assessments support progression, including Cambridge Progression Tests and Cambridge Checkpoint papers in Grade 9. Pupils take FP9 and the Optagelsesprøve after two years at LIS. Spring School runs April–June; Grade 0 starts August 2026 to begin bilingual exposure. After Grade 9, pathways include Pre-IB/IB, Danish Gymnasium programs and vocational tracks; Maribo Gymnasium offers Global Studies with up to 50% English. The campus shares facilities with partner schools and has a biology lab and the kitchen. Students access a music school, a sports hall, and a swimming center. The setting features lakes, forests, fields and trails for outdoor activities. LIS opened in 2021 as Denmark's first school of its kind.
