Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

One Planet International School was founded in 2006 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with just over 30 kindergarten students. It has grown to serve around 950 students from Kindergarten through Year 13. The school pursues a holistic approach to education that balances academic excellence with character development. It operates as a social enterprise, a profitable model with a social mission, and it provides scholarships to promising yet disadvantaged students. The school is non-denominational.

Community

Community forms a safe and supportive environment for learning and service. It is the primary setting for learning and service for the children, with partners in the education process working together to create a safe and conducive environment. Unity in diversity is a strength, with students coming from many cultural and religious backgrounds; differences are learned from and valued. The school is integrated with wider communities, and student service often takes place in these communities; the wider community also contributes through visits from outside invited guests.

Parent-Teacher Association

The Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is the school's body that brings together parents, teachers and staff to serve the needs of children and to enhance the quality of education. It encourages parental participation through volunteerism, fundraising, extracurricular activities, and teacher support and encouragement. The PTSA may undertake projects for the general development of the school with school approval; organize ongoing or occasional activities and special events (such as sports programs, after-school clubs, art and science fairs, festivals) to supplement the academic program and enhance the school's sense of community; support teaching staff with awards, recognition, and scholarships; encourage members to volunteer time and resources; develop reward coupons to give to children as rewards and positive reinforcement; and raise funds to make capital improvements to the school, such as playgrounds, libraries, and labs.
