Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

One Planet School offers a comprehensive social-emotional and character education program. Social Action for years 10-13 develops critical thinking, literacy, comprehension and eloquent speech; learners define objectives, identify problems, propose solutions, mobilize resources, and undertake sustained projects to benefit communities, including visits to elderly homes, schools for the differently abled, and borehole construction in Sebeta. The Junior Youth Character Development Program (ages 11-15) aims to form a strong moral identity and empower students to contribute to their communities, using textbooks to develop language skills, mathematical concepts, and social awareness, and engaging in activities such as artistic expression, drama, discussion, cooperative games, storytelling, and acts of service. Virtues Education teaches and practices one virtue every two weeks and reinforces moral decision-making; virtues include Love, Generosity, Kindness, Patience, and Truthfulness, with recognition for good deeds and service. The School Pledge guides student thoughts and is learned, recited and memorized, with ongoing exploration of its meaning as students progress. Together these programs seek to nurture students' heads, hands and hearts and build a socially engaged, collaborative and resilient school community.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The primary curriculum includes English and Amharic as subjects. The curriculum is Cambridge International-based and enriched with local cultural understanding within an international framework.

Mental Wellbeing

Mental wellbeing is supported through Virtues Education and the Junior Youth Character Development Program, which foster ethical values, moral identity and service to others. Social Action engages learners in projects that develop critical thinking, literacy and civic responsibility, contributing to social-emotional growth. The School Pledge provides a moral framework for students, with ongoing reflection on its meaning as they advance through grades.

Safeguarding

A safe and supportive environment for learning and service is described as the foundation of the school community. The site notes that the Community forms a safe and supportive environment for learning and service, reflecting a culture of safety and inclusivity. Staff safety training, including safety and first aid, is described in a professional development session.
