Ghana International School (GIS) is a not-for-profit, private, non-sectarian, co-educational day and boarding school established in September 1955 to provide international education to students of all races and creeds. It began as Gold Coast International School, opening in the Legion Hall with 38 pupils; enrolment grew to 60 by 1 October and 75 by 1 November, when a waiting list was started. In January 1956, GIS moved to its present premises on No. 19, 2nd Circular Road, enabling expansion to a fourth class and about 100 students; the foundation stone was laid on 29 October 1956 by Sir Charles Noble Arden-Clarke, the first Governor-General of the Gold Coast. GIS is Cambridge-based with English as the medium of instruction and is the first and only international school in Ghana to be accredited by both the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC); it is a member of the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA) and the Educational Collaborative for International Schools (ECIS).
The GIS community hosts events such as the PTA Bazaar (Community FunFest), the Sponsored Walk, UN Day and Ghana Day.
