Language Provision

Language learning opportunities and multilingual education

Language Provision

German is taught as a mother tongue (DaM) and as a foreign language (DaF). Modern Greek is taught as the native language (5–12) following the Greek Ministry program, with Ancient Greek offered as an elective (7–12) and Latin offered as an elective (10–12). Latin can be taken as an oral examination for the DIA. The program supports cross-language study in both German- and Greek-language tracks.

Bilingual Teaching

Two languages are used in instruction from Kindergarten through Sekundarstufe (Grades 5–12). Many subjects are taught in German, while others are taught in Greek. In several subjects, the language of instruction can be chosen as German or Greek (e.g., history, geography, social studies, religion, philosophy). This bilingual approach spans the entire school from early years to Grade 12.

Immersion Programs

The school provides German-Greek bilingual education across the curriculum; students learn in both languages, with daily use of German and Greek in classrooms and on the school grounds. The subject-area structure supports collaboration among teachers and language choices across subjects.

Deutsche Schule Athen (DSA) is a German overseas school in Athens, founded in 1896. It serves students from ages 3 to 18, offering Kindergarten through Sekundarstufe II, with a final DIA qualification that enables access to higher education in Germany and many countries. The curriculum is German, with a pronounced Greek emphasis, and instruction is bilingual: many subjects are taught in German while others are taught in Greek. At Profil D (grades 5–12) and Profil E (7–12), German instruction remains central, with electives such as Altgriechisch, French, and Informatik to broaden study options and future pathways. The school maintains a Maroussi campus with classrooms, an auditorium, a roofed outdoor pool, and a new athletics arena (opened 2022). DSA offers extracurriculars, including debate and MUN (DSAMUN), a tradition in theatre, and community service and ecological initiatives. Exchange programs with Germany and language and cultural activities support intercultural understanding and higher education.
