Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The Deutsche Schule Athen (DSA) was founded in 1896 and is among the oldest German overseas schools and the only German overseas school in Athens. It began with a German educational offering and expanded over the decades to include all levels of schooling, applying a German curriculum with a pronounced Greek emphasis. After World War I the school expanded from Grundschule to Gymnasium, and after World War II it reopened in 1956, later moving to Metsovou street, and was officially recognized by the German KMK as a Deutsche Auslandsschule in 1958. The German Abitur was introduced in 1959, and in 1960/61 the school implemented a two‑department structure; in 1968 it moved to a new Maroussi campus. In 2015/16 the school reorganized to a single curriculum with a common graduation (DIA), and in 2021 it celebrated its 125th anniversary and the first DIA year of the united Begegnungsschule.

Community

DSA is a learning and living place of encounter where people, cultures, values, ideas and pedagogical methods meet daily, and it offers all educational qualifications under a German curriculum with a strong Greek emphasis. The school is organized into Kindergarten / Vorschule, Grundschule (Kl. 1-4) and Sekundarstufe (Kl. 5-12). It emphasizes extracurricular activities, social responsibility, European programs and competitions, and the preservation of memory culture, while hosting large events that involve Greek and international schools. Current life at the school is showcased through Aktuelles und Veranstaltungen, including news, events, yearbooks, posters and special editions.

Parent-Teacher Association

The Deutsche Schulverein Athens operates the school as a registered association. It is a nine‑member board elected for three‑year terms, and the board includes the school leadership and, by arrangement, the German Embassy; the board is supported by several committees (finance, building, personnel, school strategy and governance). In the 2025/26 board, the roles include Chairman Dr. Marcus Bremer, Deputy Chairman Aris Pantelis Liakopoulos, Treasurer Stefan Miskias, and Secretary Dr. Henning Voelkel, among others. A parent representative has previously served as a member of the Elternbeirat (parents' council), indicating ongoing parental involvement in governance.

Deutsche Schule Athen (DSA) is a German overseas school in Athens, founded in 1896. It serves students from ages 3 to 18, offering Kindergarten through Sekundarstufe II, with a final DIA qualification that enables access to higher education in Germany and many countries. The curriculum is German, with a pronounced Greek emphasis, and instruction is bilingual: many subjects are taught in German while others are taught in Greek. At Profil D (grades 5–12) and Profil E (7–12), German instruction remains central, with electives such as Altgriechisch, French, and Informatik to broaden study options and future pathways. The school maintains a Maroussi campus with classrooms, an auditorium, a roofed outdoor pool, and a new athletics arena (opened 2022). DSA offers extracurriculars, including debate and MUN (DSAMUN), a tradition in theatre, and community service and ecological initiatives. Exchange programs with Germany and language and cultural activities support intercultural understanding and higher education.
