Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Since 1891, the school has offered uninterrupted educational tradition in Greece. The history is organized into three periods: the First Period under the name Greek Educational Institution D. N. Makrí, the Second Period as Greek Educational Institution I. M. Panagiotopoulos and D. B. Eleftheriadis, and the Third Period under the current name Greek Educational Institution – I. M. Panagiotopoulos School. In 1891 Charísios Papamarkou founded the school as the Greek Educational Institution; in 1894 it became the Greek Educational Institution D. N. Makrí at Ippokratous Street 5. I.M. Panagiotopoulos joined as a philologist in 1923; after Makrí's death in 1925 his son Nik. Makrís led the school until 1936. In 1938 the Makrí family transferred the license to Panagiotopoulos and Eleftheriadis to ensure continuity. The school moved to Pallini in 1960, and the Preschool was established in 1984. The Preschool and Primary moved to Pallini in 1987, and in 1991 the entity became the anonymous educational company Elliniko Ekpeditério – Sχοlḗ I. M. Panagiotopoulou AE.E. The International Baccalaureate began in 1996, with the High School and IB remaining in Psychiko until 2013, when the Lycée moved to Pallini and a Memorandum of Understanding with the British Council was signed; the IB program was suspended. In 2018 new facilities were built in Pallini for the High School, with further facilities added in 2020 and 2022, and in 2024 the International A Levels Programme/Pearson Edexcel started for students aiming at English-language universities. The school, in its various legal forms, has more than 130 years of educational tradition and continues to upgrade to meet the demands of a changing world and Greece's European perspective.

Community

The school community connects knowledge with experience through educational trips and international activities. Students visit major research centers and organizations such as CERN, ESA, ICFO, and European universities with Greek-language Chairs, exposing them to research, technology, and academic life abroad. They participate in international conferences in physics, robotics, and mathematics, as well as in Model United Nations (Cambridge, The Hague, University of Chicago, Haarlem, and more) and national/international robotics, forensics, and public-speaking competitions, earning notable awards. There is a strong emphasis on exchanges with Francophone and German-speaking countries, complemented by literary encounters and competitions organized by associations such as the Greek Mathematical Society and the Greek Physical Society. The school also promotes volunteering as a core value, encouraging student involvement in community service and social responsibility. The annual Christmas Bazaar, held on the first weekend of December for 31 years, mobilizes students, teachers, and alumni to support a range of social causes and beneficiaries including ESTIA, social groceries and pharmacies, the Paediatric Hospital “P. & A. Kyriakou” in Kalithea, and other organizations.
