Languages taught at the school include English, Chinese, and Putonghua (Mandarin). English is the medium of instruction for most subjects, with Chinese, General Studies II and Putonghua taught in other formats. Putonghua begins in Primary One, and a Putonghua stream runs in the Chinese language from Primary Four to Six; in all levels, reading of Chinese texts and vocabulary is presented in Putonghua. Hanyu Pinyin is taught from Primary One.
Diocesan Girls' Junior School places a strong emphasis on biliteracy in English and Chinese and supports trilingual development with Putonghua. English is the medium of instruction for most subjects, while Chinese language subjects are taught in Chinese and Putonghua is taught as a core language. Hanyu Pinyin is taught from Primary One, and a Putonghua stream has been available for Primary Four to Six to strengthen Mandarin learning. Lower primary students also participate in lunchtime Putonghua Chat Rooms to increase language exposure.
Putonghua is delivered through immersion-like features within the curriculum: a Putonghua stream for Chinese language from Primary Four to Six, and Putonghua-based lessons for cultural studies. Hanyu Pinyin is introduced from Primary One to support Mandarin pronunciation, and Chinese culture and national identity lessons are taught in Putonghua. Lunchtime Putonghua Chat Rooms provide additional exposure for lower grades.
