Discovery Bay International School (DBIS) was established in January 1983 within the Discovery Bay community on Lantau Island. It began with a small group of students taught at the Discovery Bay Residents Club before relocating later that year to a purpose-built campus. Over time, the school expanded to include Early Years, Primary, Secondary, and Sixth Form campuses. The Sixth Form, introduced under former Principal Paul Tough, saw its first A Level graduates in 2019. Today, DBIS operates as a not-for-profit international school under the governance of a Board of Governors that oversees strategic direction and development.
DBIS is home to a diverse international community of students, staff, and families representing more than 50 nationalities. The school regularly celebrates cultural and community events such as International Day, Wellbeing Week, and the DBIS Festive Fair, which encourage inclusion and global awareness. Students also participate in service initiatives like ImpactHK and local charity drives, reinforcing the school’s commitment to social responsibility and community engagement. Discovery Bay’s close-knit environment supports strong relationships between families and the school.
The DBIS Parent Teacher and Student Association (PTSA) plays an active role in fostering school spirit and community connection. It organises social events such as the Annual Festive Fair, Quiz Nights, and Welcome Back gatherings for families each term. The PTSA also supports fundraising for charitable causes and school enhancement projects, often collaborating with students on service initiatives. Parents volunteer regularly across school events, including Book Week, International Day, and Sports Days. The association meets throughout the academic year to provide feedback and strengthen communication between parents, staff, and school leadership, ensuring families remain involved in school life.
Discovery Bay International School’s Sixth Form (Years 12–13) sits within a British-curriculum pathway from Early Years to Secondary in Discovery Bay, Lantau Island. Students typically study A Levels, with BTEC options available to broaden pathways. The Secondary learning environment features two computing/Design Technology suites with resources such as robotics and 3D printers, and students make use of a Blackbox theatre for performance. DBIS notes an emphasis on small class sizes and personalised support. Co-curricular options include FOBISIA Maths, Debating, Environmental Club, and ImpactHK service activities. The school operates a bus service, including Discovery Bay–Tung Chung connections, and publishes detailed fees and levy information (10 monthly instalments). DBIS is CIS-accredited and bases its curriculum on the English National Curriculum; the Sixth Form is located at Discovery Bay North Plaza.
