Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Lam Tai Fai College participates in the Whole School Health Programme and was named an Advanced School for the 2024/25 academic year, recognizing the integration of mental health and social health themes into the curriculum as part of a Health Promoting School framework. The Guidance and Counseling Department provides formal student support through a School Social Worker (two social workers) affiliated with the Jockey Club Shatin Integrated Service Centre for Children and Youth, with defined service hours. The Guidance and Counseling Unit offers guidance support, group activities, and training programs to help students adapt and thrive, and it strengthens communication among students, families, and the community. Stress management, time management, and other wellbeing topics are provided through student talks and workshops, and there are peer-support structures such as a Guidance Prefect to promote a caring campus culture. Discipline and Pastoral Care aims to develop students' emotional quotient and self-discipline to maintain a positive learning environment, with related activities like Prefect training and camps.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Lam Tai Fai College provides SEN support through a Learning Support Department (LSD) coordinated by staff including the Head of LSD who coordinates the department. Staff hold certifications such as Certification of Catering for Diverse Learning Needs (Advanced Level), indicating training to support Diverse Learning Needs. The department's focus centers on catering for Diverse Learning Needs within the inclusive education model, rather than presenting LTFC as a dedicated specialist SEN institution. School Social Workers, part of the Guidance and Counseling Department, work with external partners (affiliated with the Jockey Club Shatin Integrated Service Centre for Children and Youth) to support students with learning or wellbeing needs. Public materials describe SEN provision as delivered via LSD and GCD (Guidance & Counseling Department) rather than a separate specialist SEN facility.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The school aims for a tri-lingual approach (English, Cantonese, and Putonghua) with English and Putonghua as core languages and regular small-group teaching to support diverse abilities. Some junior secondary Chinese classes are taught in Putonghua, and regular Language Arts lessons are taught by native English speakers to strengthen English proficiency. An authentic language environment is provided through the English Café and Putonghua World, with additional English and Putonghua activities during lunch and after school. Morning assemblies and daily announcements are conducted mainly in English and Putonghua to maximize exposure. The school emphasizes immersive language use across the curriculum.

Mental Wellbeing

Lam Tai Fai College has been recognized for implementing mental health and social health themes as part of WSHP. The Guidance and Counseling Department provides School Social Workers and a School Social Worker network to support student wellbeing through external partnerships. The Guidance and Counseling unit emphasizes facilitating communication among students, families, and the community to support whole-person development. It offers activities and talks on stress management and related topics to support mental wellbeing, and the Discipline and Pastoral Care Department focuses on developing students' emotional well-being and resilience through structured programs and events.

Safeguarding

The Guidance and Counseling Department includes two School Social Workers (Ms. Yeung LK and Ms. So MM) with affiliated organizations at the Jockey Club Shatin Integrated Service Centre for Children and Youth, and they provide defined contact hours to support safeguarding needs. The Guidance Mistress states a commitment to creating a caring and respectful atmosphere for students, aiming for whole-person growth and strong school-family-community communication. The Discipline and Pastoral Care Department outlines objectives to foster self-discipline and a safe learning environment, supported by activities such as prefect training, camps, and student workshops focused on wellbeing and safety. The Guidance and Counseling unit provides teacher training on topics including communication with parents and teenagers, to support safeguarding best practices.
