Norwegian International School (NIS) was originally established by the Norwegian Lutheran Mission and the Norwegian Mission Society as a non-profit school for the children of Norwegian missionaries. In its early years, the language of instruction was Norwegian, with English lessons taught as subjects. The school later relocated to Tai Po (with the “Tai Po Bungalow” heritage building) and changed its name to NIS when it became fully English-medium and opened up to an international student body. Operational control was transferred to Generations Christian Education, which now manages NIS as part of its educational group.
The school fosters a close-knit community in the Tai Po district, where families and staff gather for events such as the “Viking Open Day” and the “Superheroes Kindergarten Open House”. These events bring together students, parents and teachers for hands-on activities, entertainment and social interaction. The wider community also engages in outdoor and cultural gatherings, reflecting the school’s commitment to blending learning, faith-based values and communal life.
The PTA at NIS is active in organising community-friendly events; for example, the PTA hosted a movie night featuring food and snacks where families watched “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” together. Additionally, the PTA supports school fairs and outdoor gatherings, such as the event with bouncy castles, game booths and face-painting. These gatherings are aimed at strengthening parent–teacher–student connections and fostering a supportive social environment. The PTA also assists with communication between school leadership and families, ensuring that the community is involved in the school’s life and culture.
Norwegian International School (NIS) in Hong Kong is a Christian-values-focused international day school for children aged from about 2 years 8 months up to 11 years (Year 6). It offers a Kindergarten campus at 175 Kwong Fuk Road and a Primary campus at 170 Kam Shan Road in Tai Po, New Territories. Instruction is in English, guided by the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC) in the early years and the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) in the primary years. Specialist Mandarin (Putonghua) lessons are also part of the programme. Class sizes average around 23-28 students. NIS emphasises outdoor learning and play in its leafy Tai Po setting and grounds its educational approach in a Christian ethos with service and community-mindedness. The school also offers a school bus service. For families seeking a smaller-scale international primary environment in Hong Kong that blends enquiry-based learning with outdoor opportunities and faith-inspired values, NIS provides a distinctive option.
