Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

Shrewsbury International School Hong Kong officially opened in 2018, as part of the Shrewsbury International Asia network. It draws on the heritage of the original Shrewsbury School in the UK, which was founded by Royal Charter in 1552. In 2025, the school announced expansion into secondary education (Years 7 and 8), pending approval from the Hong Kong Education Bureau.

Community

The school fosters a sense of belonging through its House System, where students are assigned to one of six houses from Year 1; house points are awarded for positive behavior, effort, and engagement across activities. Community events include Open Mornings (e.g. the Open Morning of October 2025) where families tour campus and meet staff. The school also emphasizes cooperation between staff, parents, and the wider community via the Parent Association (SPA).

Parent-Teacher Association

The Shrewsbury Parents Association (SPA) was established by parents to promote cooperation and dialogue between school leadership and the parent body. SPA meets monthly with the Principal to discuss priorities such as event planning, fundraising, school development, and parent–school relations. Its membership and activities emphasize representation and inclusion as key principles. Through SPA, parents are involved in organizing social, cultural, and community events that link them more closely to school life.

Shrewsbury International School Hong Kong, established in 2018, offers a British curriculum for children aged 3 to 11. The Early Years Foundation Stage leads into a structured Primary program, with English as the language of instruction and Mandarin taught as a subject. Families benefit from a dedicated school bus service connecting different parts of Hong Kong. The school is particularly known for its strong focus on performing arts: specialist facilities include a fully equipped theatre and music suites that support concerts, drama productions, and creative expression from an early age. Shrewsbury also places emphasis on STEM, supported by science and technology resources that enrich classroom learning. Together, these features make the school a distinctive choice for families seeking primary education rooted in British traditions.
