Extra-Curricular Activities

Clubs, activities, and opportunities to explore interests and passions

Academic and Intellectual

The Deutsche Schule Budapest prepares students for the German middle-level school leaving certificates as well as for German and Hungarian university entrance. The school teaches mainly in German and follows German curricula; students pursuing the German Abitur or a combined German and Hungarian Abitur are supported. From preschool through the Abitur, there is a strong emphasis on individual development and targeted support; the school is backed by four founders: the Federal Republic of Germany, Hungary, the City of Budapest, and the state of Baden-Württemberg.

Arts and Creative

The after-school program includes creative activities such as crafts, pottery visits, cooking courses, and other hands-on projects. Regularly, children engage in Bastel-AGs (craft activities) to celebrate holidays and events, and there are opportunities for creative exploration during monthly thematic programs (e.g., crafts, baking, and decorating for festive occasions). The program provides child-friendly spaces for crafts, reading, drawing, and play, plus supervised play on the playground with equipment for ball games and other activities.

Cultural and Language

The school is part of a network of German Auslandsschulen and emphasizes German language and culture while fostering intercultural dialogue. German language instruction is predominant, with Hungarian language and culture taught as part of the curriculum; Hungarian language and literature, Hungarian history, biology, and chemistry are taught in Hungarian to students pursuing dual German-Hungarian qualifications. German students also learn Hungarian as a second language to engage with Hungarian language and culture.

Social and Hobbies

The after-school program focuses on the social development of students, promoting social competence, responsibility, good manners, conflict resolution, independence, and cooperative play. Students shape their after-school experience by choosing activities with peers, participating in group routines, and engaging in supervised social activities. Monthly off-site and themed activities (e.g., museum visits, workshops, and cultural events) broaden social and hobby opportunities.

Community and Service

Community-oriented activities include charitable and festive initiatives, such as holiday projects and drives to support those in need (e.g., gift campaigns and donations during Advent). The program also incorporates excursions to cultural and educational venues to strengthen community ties and civic awareness.

Lifestyle and Wellbeing

The after-school care provides supervision until 5:00 PM, supporting a balanced routine that allows time for homework, rest, and physical activities. The environment includes a crafts area, cozy corners, and a sports area with outdoor play on the school grounds, table tennis, and climbing structures, plus equipment for ball games and active recreation, contributing to physical well-being and social interaction.

Deutsche Schule Budapest is a German‑Hungarian bilingual school for ages 5 to 18. The campus sits in Budapest's XII district on a 3.6‑hectare forested site, with a modern building expanded in 2023 offering multimedia classrooms and specialist facilities. The school operates Grundschule (0. Klasse to 4. Klasse) and Gymnasium, with two language streams: Deutscher Zweig (German track) and Ungarischer Zweig (Hungarian track). Deutschunterricht is delivered as Deutsch als Fremdsprache or Deutsch als Muttersprache, with separate curricula for DaF (1–9) and DaM (5–12). The German‑language stream is taught mainly by native German‑speaking teachers, and KMK guidelines shape the curriculum. The Gymnasium includes Studienberatung, Orientierungsstufe, Mittelstufe and Oberstufe. Founded in 1990 as a German‑Hungarian encounter school, it is part of the international network of German Auslandsschulen and is sponsored by the Deutsche Schule Budapest Foundation, representing Germany, Hungary, Baden‑Württemberg and the City of Budapest. The campus features a well‑stocked library, an on‑site theatre, an in‑house kitchen, a gymnasium, outdoor sports grounds and a forest learning trail.
