Language Provision

Language learning opportunities and multilingual education

Language Provision

Grundschule comprises 0. Klasse and 1.–4. Klasse. The German track provides instruction in German; the Hungarian track teaches German as a foreign language. The school draws on decades of experience from its eight-year Gymnasium, shaping Grundschule work. Language-support measures include a Förderkonzept with partial team-teaching in large classes, tutoring hours, division of classes for Deutsch als Fremdsprache in the Hungarian track, extended hours for the school psychologist, and development of concepts for reading/writing difficulties and dyscalculia. In Grade 1, Deutsch als Fremdsprache is taught in groups of about 10 students.

Bilingual Teaching

Two first-grade classes are opened each school year, with instruction following the German education system and conducted in German. In our classes Hungarian and German children learn together—in a truly bilingual and intercultural environment. The program serves German-speaking or bilingual children who want to begin their schooling under the German curriculum and prepare for a possible later transfer to Germany, as well as Hungarian children who want to learn another language and culture early. Through daily interaction, students develop an open, international perspective and acquire the German language naturally.

Immersion Programs

German is the language of instruction in the German-track Grundschule; in the Hungarian Grundschulzweig, German is taught as a foreign language (Deutsch als Fremdsprache).

Deutsche Schule Budapest is a German‑Hungarian bilingual school for ages 5 to 18. The campus sits in Budapest's XII district on a 3.6‑hectare forested site, with a modern building expanded in 2023 offering multimedia classrooms and specialist facilities. The school operates Grundschule (0. Klasse to 4. Klasse) and Gymnasium, with two language streams: Deutscher Zweig (German track) and Ungarischer Zweig (Hungarian track). Deutschunterricht is delivered as Deutsch als Fremdsprache or Deutsch als Muttersprache, with separate curricula for DaF (1–9) and DaM (5–12). The German‑language stream is taught mainly by native German‑speaking teachers, and KMK guidelines shape the curriculum. The Gymnasium includes Studienberatung, Orientierungsstufe, Mittelstufe and Oberstufe. Founded in 1990 as a German‑Hungarian encounter school, it is part of the international network of German Auslandsschulen and is sponsored by the Deutsche Schule Budapest Foundation, representing Germany, Hungary, Baden‑Württemberg and the City of Budapest. The campus features a well‑stocked library, an on‑site theatre, an in‑house kitchen, a gymnasium, outdoor sports grounds and a forest learning trail.
