Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

The Deutsche Schule Budapest is a German-Hungarian encounter school founded in 1990 within the framework of an intergovernmental agreement as a joint undertaking of Germany and Hungary. It is part of a worldwide network of more than 140 German international schools. The school is sponsored by the Deutsche Schule Budapest Foundation. The founders of the Foundation are the Federal Republic of Germany, Hungary, the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg, and the City of Budapest. The Foundation is represented by a nine-member Foundation Council, the highest governing, decision-making, and administrative body, while a four-member Supervisory Board oversees the Foundation's activities and finances.

Community

The SMV (student council) is an independent school body that represents the interests of all students. Student representatives organize projects such as sports tournaments, tutoring, and DSB merchandise in collaboration with trusted teachers, the school leadership, and the school administration. They also participate in school working groups and conferences to shape school life at all levels. If you have a concern, speak to the SMV at school or email smv@deutscheschule.hu.

Parent-Teacher Association

The Elternbeirat (Parents' Council) embodies the encounter of German and Hungarian students and parents, and the integration of German and Hungarian cultures—the Begegenungs-Schule idea has long been a central value. Today, Begegnung also means openness and a willingness to explore and master new things, which the council aims to live out at the school. The Elternbeirat is an important link between the school bodies; its board communicates information and, in dialogue with the school leadership, the Foundation, and teachers, contributes to resolving parents' concerns. The board for the 2025/26 school year is Magdolna Holczer (Chair), Zsuzsa Bencsik, Katalin Óvári, Marcell Szendrői, Béla Tolvaj, and Krisztina Vécsei, and the contact email is ebr_vorstand@deutscheschule.hu. Information about the Elternbeirat is provided via the PTA flyer and PTA meeting protocols for the 2025/2026 school year.

Deutsche Schule Budapest is a German‑Hungarian bilingual school for ages 5 to 18. The campus sits in Budapest's XII district on a 3.6‑hectare forested site, with a modern building expanded in 2023 offering multimedia classrooms and specialist facilities. The school operates Grundschule (0. Klasse to 4. Klasse) and Gymnasium, with two language streams: Deutscher Zweig (German track) and Ungarischer Zweig (Hungarian track). Deutschunterricht is delivered as Deutsch als Fremdsprache or Deutsch als Muttersprache, with separate curricula for DaF (1–9) and DaM (5–12). The German‑language stream is taught mainly by native German‑speaking teachers, and KMK guidelines shape the curriculum. The Gymnasium includes Studienberatung, Orientierungsstufe, Mittelstufe and Oberstufe. Founded in 1990 as a German‑Hungarian encounter school, it is part of the international network of German Auslandsschulen and is sponsored by the Deutsche Schule Budapest Foundation, representing Germany, Hungary, Baden‑Württemberg and the City of Budapest. The campus features a well‑stocked library, an on‑site theatre, an in‑house kitchen, a gymnasium, outdoor sports grounds and a forest learning trail.
