Academics

German Primary School of Debrecen teaches German Curriculum.

Curriculum

The German Primary School Debrecen is a department of the German international school at the Hungarian-German Education Center in Baja. The school aims to be a Begegnungsschule (a school of encounter) and welcomes both mother-tongue German and Hungarian children. It teaches on the basis of the educational plans of the Land of Bavaria for progression to a German-language school. For Hungarian children, instruction in Hungarian language and literature ensures compatibility with the Hungarian education system; German-language instruction is complemented by German as a foreign language for Hungarian-speaking students, and Hungarian as a foreign language for German-speaking students. The languages and traditions of both countries form a connecting bond, and music fosters mutual understanding. The school prepares students for continuing their education at a German-language internal school.

Higher Education Progression

The school prepares students for continuing their education at a German-language internal school.
Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The school provides personality development support to prevent conflicts and to promote positive conflict resolution. Teachers, school leadership, and parents respect students' personality rights and support their individual development. Students are encouraged to engage in direct, respectful communication and collaborative problem-solving rather than discussing others behind their backs. When problems arise at home or school, the first point of contact is the relevant subject teacher and the class tutor; if needed, the head of the branch and the principal are available to assist. The approach fosters mutual respect and trust among students and staff to support social-emotional growth.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

In the 3rd and 4th grades, German is taught as the main language and German as a foreign language is offered; Hungarian is also taught as a foreign language. English is taught as a language subject within the curriculum, and the foreign language assessments may include tasks designed as specialized learning activities. English is part of the modern language offerings alongside German.

Mental Wellbeing

Mental wellbeing is supported through personality development initiatives and conflict-prevention practices. The school emphasizes respectful, trustworthy interactions among students and between students and staff, contributing to a supportive learning environment. Students receive guidance from teachers and school leadership regarding personal development and conflict issues, and the program aims to strengthen resilience, self-control, and social skills through structured activities. The presence of student councils and class representatives further supports student voice and wellbeing.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is implemented through structured conflict management and safeguarding procedures. In conflict situations, issues are handled in stages (teacher → form tutor → branch head → principal), with a disciplinary committee possible for serious cases. Physical punishment or any measures violating human dignity are not permitted. There is an appeals and complaints process, and parents and students can participate in safeguarding-related discussions. Supervision and governance structures, including the DÖK (student council) and class representatives, support a safe school community.
Parent Experience

History

Opened in the Vénkerti district of Debrecen on August 29, 2022, the Debreceni Német Általános Iskola started with two German and two Hungarian teachers and eight first-grade students. Over the next three school years, one additional first-grade class was added each year, so by September 2025 every general-education year has a class. The school is a branch of the Baja-based Magyarországi Németek Általános Művelődési Központ (MNÁMK Baja tagintézmény) and aims to be a meeting point for Hungarian and German cultures. German is taught as a foreign language to Hungarian-speaking students, and Hungarian as a foreign language to German-speaking students, with the goal of preparing students for study in Germany under Bavarian state curricula and for integration into the Hungarian education system. Music fosters mutual understanding as students sing and dance songs from both countries.

Community

Upcoming events include the Summer holidays from June 20, 2026 to August 30, 2026; Schultüte basteln on August 25, 2026 for parents of future first-graders; and Beiskolázási ünnepség on August 29, 2026 for future first-graders. Ballagás, the graduation of the first class that began four years earlier, was celebrated with an emotional ceremony and decorations in the classrooms, corridors, and the atrium. The 3rd and 4th graders joined in the graduation program.
