The Daly College originated as the Residency College in Indore and a new building was inaugurated on November 14, 1885 by the Viceroy, Lord Dufferin. By 1891 the Holkars of Indore and the Scindias of Gwalior donated two student houses, and later 118 acres were added east of the old campus. Construction began in 1906 on two student houses, a temple, a mosque and the Principal's residence; the main building—made of Udaipur marble in the Indo-Saracenic style by Col. Swinton Jacob—was inaugurated on November 8, 1912 by the Viceroy, Lord Hardinge. For 28 years admissions were restricted to the sons of Central India's chiefs; in 1940 the Board opened admissions on merit for a modern and free India and the college joined the Indian Public Schools Conference (IPSC). In 2005 it became a member of Round Square, and the Sanskrit motto "Gyanamev Shakti" means Knowledge is Power.
DC is a Round Square school since 2005, promoting internationalism and leadership through global networks. GALES and AFS partnerships enable international exchanges and conferences, with Model United Nations participation and international visits by students and staff. The Daly Ethos service club leads community outreach through IPSC Service Projects, DC Service Day, and environmental initiatives such as paper recycling and tree planting. DC hosts IPSC dance and music festivals and runs a range of co-curricular programs, including Round Square exchanges and international conferences.
