Welham Boys' School began as Welham Preparatory School in 1937, founded by Ms. Oliphant. Finances were aided by a grant from Ms. Oliphant's mother, who sent money from Welham, England. The first boy joined on 15 January 1937, and within a year there were thirty residential and twenty day scholars; Grade 5 was added in 1941, and the school banner bearing the motto 'From Strength to Strength' was carried for the first time in the Games March Past in 1941. Elevated to a plus-two Secondary School in 1985, Welham is affiliated to the CBSE curriculum and administered by a Board of Trustees of the Welham Boys' School Society.
