In 1957, Miss H. S. Oliphant acquired a Nawab's estate in Dehradun to create Welham Girls' School, entrusting Grace Mary Linnell to set up and run the residential school for girls. Welham, named after a Welsh village, began with ten students and soon grew synonymous with high scholastic standards rooted in Indian tradition, reaching about 540 students. The school's motto is artt shanti phala vidya — The aim of knowledge is to bring peace — and the Welham community emphasizes integrity, civility and inclusion. Linnell led the school from 1957 to 1970, followed by Miss Saroj Srivastava (1970–1988), Mrs. Shanti Varma (1988–2000), Mrs. Jyotsna Brar (2000–2016), Mrs. Padmini Sambasivam (2016–2022), and since May 2022, Mrs. Vibha Kapoor heads the institution. The school is affiliated to ICSE and ISC.
Welham maintains an active school life with a calendar of events and cultural programmes. The WGS Calendar page shows events and a monthly view, including School Birthday & Investiture Ceremony 2026, Jane Austen's 250th Birthday Programme, and ongoing Founders' Day celebrations with alumnae visiting the campus. The second day of the 68th Founders' Day was a vibrant celebration, and Nostalgia highlighted alumnae returning for the 68th Founders' Day. Other highlights include A Home Victory for WGS! and Jazbaat 2.0 – Celebrating the Power of Positive Psychology, reflecting a dynamic and engaged community of students, staff, and alumni.
