Clarence International School opened in Omotesando, Tokyo in 2016 with a vision to offer discerning families access to a culturally rich international education. The school collaborated with the British royal founding charity Children & The Arts, a UK charity founded by HRH Prince of Wales in 2006, to expose children to the arts in Japan. Clarence International School is the origin of Clarence Education Asia, a group that began as a small refurbished Minami Aoyama preschool in 2016 and has since grown to include six brands such as Rugby School Japan and Phoenix House, among others. In 2026, CIS relocated to a larger site in Nishi Azabu, with the final day at the Omotesando campus on March 20, 2026 and the new campus opening anticipated on April 8, 2026, as part of strengthening the Clarence Education Asia educational pathway.
The school community is international, with families from Brazil, Australia, America, Korea, China, Japan, Germany, the UK and France. The arts are central to Clarence learning, with weekly music lessons and a diverse visual arts program alongside a language focus that emphasizes English through exposure to high quality texts. Outdoor learning and local park visits, including Muddy Parks, are regular features of the program and support healthy, active development. The community is engaged through events such as art exhibitions and parent information sessions that bring families together.
Parent involvement is described through established channels rather than a named PTA. Weekly online information sessions explain the school, classes and activities, and are held on Mondays from 12:00 to 13:00 JST. The school hosts parent focused events such as the Clarence Art Exhibition and Parent Information Session, which provide opportunities for families to engage with the school. There are after school clubs and holiday programs that involve families in activities and communication about school life. Prospective and current families can book on site tours or online information sessions to learn about the school, and the school provides direct contact channels for parent inquiries through admissions and office emails.
Clarence International School is a British international pre-prep school in Minami-Aoyama, described as being in the heart of Tokyo. It serves children from 18 months to 6 years old and follows the English Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and the National Curriculum of England. Learning includes a strong arts component: the school highlights weekly music lessons with specialist teachers and visual art experiences such as sculpture, printmaking and ceramics. Outdoor learning is built in through frequent time in nearby parks and “Muddy Parks.” In the Rainbow class, children also begin structured technology learning, including typing, LEGO coding, Scratch and robotics. Beyond the school day, children can join termly clubs and the school states it operates its own bus service for routes and excursions.
