Extra-Curricular Activities

Clubs, activities, and opportunities to explore interests and passions

Academic and Intellectual

HIS Niseko delivers an English-language international education guided by the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC), integrating science, history, geography, society, technology and the arts with place-based learning rooted in Hokkaido. Language Arts and Mathematics curricula are developed by the Curriculum Team to support cross-curricular inquiry. The Huskies Life literacy programs include HIS Reads, HIS Writes, and the HIS Creative Writing Class to develop reading, writing, and creative expression. A student-led Newspaper Club provides opportunities to practice journalism and publications beyond class assignments.

Arts and Creative

Arts are a pillar of student life at HIS, with a program that emphasizes visual arts, music, writing, and performance. The school hosts end-of-year concerts and performances, reflecting music as a core area and offering opportunities to participate in lighting, stage management, and performance roles. The Art Club is a student-driven community where members collaborate on art for school events and learn foundational art techniques through group projects. Visual arts, design thinking, and creative writing are integrated across the arts offerings for secondary students.

Cultural and Language

The school runs cross-cultural exchanges through the SHS x HIS Domestic Global Exchange, connecting HIS students with Sagara High School in Makinohara through in-person visits and online exchanges. Makinohara partnership activities are supported by the Makinohara Education Service House (M.E.S.H.), which promotes English learning and intercultural collaboration with Makinohara students. The Makinohara exchange includes programs such as virtual tours and joint projects to deepen cultural understanding and language practice. The MESH group also engages the Junior Action Sports Club as part of intercultural learning through sport and collaboration.

Social and Hobbies

The Outdoors program emphasizes outdoor learning and wellness, with an Outdoor Leadership class that focuses on leadership and experiential learning across campus and across Hokkaido, including overnight hikes, snowshoeing, and rock climbing. Students and families encounter a range of outdoor activities described in articles and posts such as Outdoor Pursuits, senior hikes, and seasonal outdoor events. Huskies Athletics operates on a rotating three- to four-season schedule with after-school practices; facilities support basketball, volleyball, badminton, futsal and other activities, and teams compete in regional events. Social and sporting life is strengthened by ongoing posts and events, including annual Huskies sports events and student-led activities.

Community and Service

HIS Huskies MUSH is a service-oriented club that conducts weekly Trash Clean-Ups, monthly blood donations for eligible students, school garden care, donations to orphanages, and fundraising for charitable causes. Friday Camps and other service-focused activities provide additional opportunities for students to engage with the local community. The Huskies Legacy Association connects alumni with current students through events and publications, highlighting leadership, mentorship, and community impact. The Fall Festival and other school-community events further strengthen service-learning and community ties.

Leadership and Professional

The Outdoor Leadership program builds leadership capabilities through on-campus and field experiences, including overnight hikes, snowshoeing, rock climbing, and trip planning. The Huskies Legacy Association engages alumni in leadership, mentorship, and public-facing activities such as performances and career storytelling. The SHS x HIS Domestic Global Exchange and Makinohara activities offer student-led intercultural projects that develop leadership and project-management skills. Student councils and school events provide practical opportunities for organization, planning, and collaboration.

Lifestyle and Wellbeing

Outdoor leadership and the Outdoor Program place a strong emphasis on wellness, safety, and physical fitness through real-world outdoor education such as overnight hikes, snowshoeing, cross‑country skiing and rock climbing. The Niseko and Sapporo campuses offer access to year‑round outdoor activities and nature-based learning as part of daily life. The outdoor and wellness pillars are reinforced by posts and articles about winter and summer outdoor experiences and wellness initiatives.
