Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

HIS Niseko was established in 2011 as a branch of Hokkaido International School in Sapporo, extending HIS's English-language international education to the Niseko region. In January 2012, HIS Niseko opened its Niseko campus as a satellite of HIS Sapporo (operational from January 23, 2012). The school is private, not-for-profit, and coeducational, offering English-language instruction for Early Years through Grade 8. Along with HIS Sapporo, HIS Niseko is one of the two accredited international schools on Hokkaido. The Niseko campus is part of the HIS network, sharing a common mission and program framework with the Sapporo site.

Community

HIS Niseko sits within a two-campus HIS community, together with HIS Sapporo, hosting students and staff from multiple nationalities. Community life focuses on place-based learning, student performances, and open events that invite local families and the broader Niseko community. Annual events such as the Fall Festival, Winter Celebration, and Spring Bazaar are key touchpoints for engagement between families, students, and staff. Open exchanges and collaborative activities between the Sapporo and Niseko campuses illustrate the inclusive and connected Husky family culture.

Parent-Teacher Association

The HIS PTA operates at both the Sapporo and Niseko campuses, aiming to increase parent understanding of educational issues, improve communication within the parent community, and raise funds to support school programs. Regular PTA meetings are held throughout the year, and all parents are encouraged to participate. The PTA coordinates major community events such as the Fall Festival and the Spring Bazaar, which serve as fundraisers and volunteer opportunities for families. Additional PTA activities include volunteer coordination, supporting annual development initiatives, and maintaining a directory of parent skills to assist committees. Parents can contact the Niseko PTA via the PTA mailbox at the reception to get involved.

Hokkaido International School Niseko is a private, not-for-profit, coeducational day school in Niseko Town, offering an English-language international education from Early Years through Grade 8. Learning in Kindergarten to Grade 5 is delivered through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), and Grades 6–8 use the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC). Early Years is inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach. The campus integrates place-based learning by using Hokkaido’s history, geography and natural environment as an extension of the curriculum. Students also use Singapore Math (Math in Focus) from Kindergarten through Grade 6. A distinctive feature is the school’s outdoor programming, including a Niseko summer program with nature hikes and forestry, plus additional activities such as choir, botanical artmaking, cooking and gardening.
