Parent Experience

Community, involvement and what it's like to be a parent at this school

History

KIU Academy operates under the governance of Kyoto International University (KIU). The KIU organization began in 1996 after demerging from Phillips University Japan, which had opened in 1989. KIU Academy opened its Elementary and Middle Schools in 1999, followed by the High School in 2000. Enrollment grew from 7 students at founding to 235 by April 2021, and the campus relocated to Kyotanabe in spring 2022. KIU Academy and KIU have since earned accreditation from the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) in 2011 and from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in 2022; the founder and president is Peter Blocksom.

Community

KIUA presents bilingual, internationally minded education with students from many countries; 23 countries and regions are represented in the student body. The school emphasizes English and Japanese bilingual communication and cross-cultural collaboration as part of its mission and philosophy. Community life is visible in school events such as Sports Day (as illustrated in KIUA's Sports Day image gallery) and graduation ceremonies (e.g., the 2021 high school graduation). These elements reflect a global, multicultural environment and a student-to-faculty ratio of about 9:1.

Parent-Teacher Association

KIUA does not list a formal Parent Teacher Association on its site. Instead, parent and community involvement is coordinated through Giving & Sponsorship activities that engage families and corporate supporters in supporting KIU's mission. The Giving & Sponsorship page notes that Kyoto International University seeks donors and sponsors, and it explains tax benefits for donations under KIU's status as a Tokutei Koeki Zoshin Hojin. A notable initiative documented on the page is the KIU Campus Relocation Fund (July 2019–July 2022), supported by 172 donors and totaling JPY 53,590,000 for campus relocation and educational enhancements. The page also lists current sponsors and partners, highlighting ongoing corporate and individual involvement in KIU's programs. Taken together, these elements show active donor-driven engagement as a primary channel for community participation in KIU Academy rather than a formal PTA structure.
