Introduction

The Deutsche Schule Nairobi is a German curriculum school for ages 1 to 18, with Kindergarten, Primary and Secondary divisions on campus in Gigiri, Nairobi, opposite Village Market. The school is affiliated with Germany and follows KMK standards for Sekundarstufe, enabling Hauptschulabschluss, Realschulabschluss and Deutsches Internationales Abitur. German is the language of instruction in all subjects, while Geography is taught in English and History is taught bilingually in German and English; French is introduced from Class 6 as a second foreign language. The curriculum develops linguistic competence in German and English, analytical thinking, scientific work, societal responsibility and cultural openness. The campus features classrooms, specialist rooms and facilities for sport, including a large field with a tribune, volleyball, basketball and tennis courts, a heated swimming pool and five playgrounds. Solar energy provides electricity. After-school activities include STEM & Robotics, Junior Choir and Cooking Club. Its 50th anniversary was in 2019.

The Kindergarten day runs from 7:30 to 15:30, Fridays 7:30 to 13:00. The day includes a morning circle, breakfast, project work, outdoor play and rest periods. Deutsch als Fremdsprache is taught weekly in groups, with additional small-group DaF sessions for preschoolers.

Bus service

A safe and reliable school bus service operates for Kindergarten and school children across Nairobi. Buses cover major residential areas and are organized in three zones. Riders are picked up at home and dropped off; an accompanying person is required for children under three. Annual tuition at German School Nairobi ranges from KES 8,850 to KES 14,900 for 2026/27.

Tuition fees (per academic year, all amounts in EUR — lunch included)

Enrolment / application fees
- One-off enrolment fee (non-refundable): First child EUR 1,000; second child EUR 800; any additional child EUR 400.
- Fee to place a child on the kindergarten waiting list: EUR 100 (if a place is offered this amount is credited to enrolment; otherwise non-refundable).

Deposit and membership
- Security deposit: EUR 1,000 per child — refundable after the child is de-registered and all outstanding dues are settled.
- Membership fee (mandatory): EUR 50 per parent/legal guardian per academic year (includes yearbook).

School bus fees (per academic year / per semester)
- Bus Zone 1 (Runda, Gigiri, Rosslyn, Horse Shoe, Nyari, New Muthaiga): EUR 930 per year / EUR 500 per semester.
- Bus Zone 2 (Lake View, Loresho, Westlands, Parklands, Muthaiga, Fourways, Five Star, Askari Lane, Kitusuru, Kyuna, Spring Valley, Bendera Lane): EUR 1,370 per year / EUR 720 per semester.
- Bus Zone 3 (Lavington, Kileleshwa, Kilimani, Riara-Ngong Road, Yaya/Hurlingham, Hatheru Road, Gitanga Road, Riverside Drive, Raphta Road): EUR 1,600 per year / EUR 820 per semester.
- Bus routes and availability are zone-based and subject to availability; detailed route and enrolment information is provided through the school's transport channels.

Billing schedule and payment terms
- All fees are invoiced and charged in EUR. Proforma invoices are issued in June. Payment models available: annual payment due 31 August, or half-yearly payments due 31 August and 28 February. (Payments by quarter or semester can be arranged with written authorization from the accounts department.)
- Tuition, kindergarten and bus fees are generally due at the start of the school year (1 August) unless an alternative schedule has been agreed in writing. Non-payment may trigger reminder fees and may lead to exclusion from school activities or enrolment.
- If a child is deregistered, the deregistration period is six weeks after receipt of the written withdrawal notice. Outstanding statutory fee claims remain until a formal reduction or settlement decision is issued.

Other costs and additional fees
- All annual tuition figures quoted above include lunch; costs that are outside the school's compulsory services are charged in addition. Examples of additional costs that parents must pay separately include extra-curricular activities, optional courses, certain student workbooks or materials that the school purchases and issues, school trips and other optional services.
- Uniforms and school-shop purchases are separate costs and are handled via the school shop; these are not included in the tuition figures above and are payable by parents as required.

Refund information
- Enrolment/application fees are non-refundable. The kindergarten waiting-list fee is non-refundable unless credited to enrolment when a place is offered.
- The security deposit (EUR 1,000 per child) is refundable once the child is formally de-registered and all outstanding fees and obligations have been cleared. Transport fee reimbursement on deregistration follows the fee regulations and is handled according to the school's fee rules.
- There is no general exemption from paying for learning or teaching materials; applications for fee waivers or reductions must be submitted within the school's stated deadlines and are considered by the administration.

Fee payment instructions and options
- The school issues proforma invoices with payment instructions (currency, amounts and the account or payment details required). Payment deadlines and any authorized alternative instalment plans are shown on those invoices; arrangements for split payments by quarter or semester require written authorization from the accounts department.

German School Nairobi teaches German Curriculum for students aged 1 to 18.

Curriculum

The Sekundarstufe curriculum follows KMK standards and is Germany-approved. It enables Hauptschulabschluss, Realschulabschluss, and Deutsches Internationales Abitur. English is the language of Geography instruction, and History is taught bilingually in German and English. French is introduced from Class 6 as a second foreign language. The curriculum emphasizes linguistic competence in German and English, analytical thinking, scientific work, societal responsibility, and cultural openness. Wellbeing

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

School social work is a fixed part of DSN Nairobi's life, offering listening, guidance, and connection for students, families, and staff. The Parents' Café, run with the special education team, provides information and discussion on ADHD, reading and spelling difficulties, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and media use. The school runs theme weeks on mindfulness, mental health, neurodiversity, and diversity and respect to promote wellbeing and inclusion. Individual case counseling is available for students, parents, and teachers to listen, support, and work toward solutions. Class cohesion is strengthened through class visits that foster belonging and social skills for all. The social work program collaborates with specialists to ensure inclusive practices across the school.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

The school provides support for students with special educational needs through social work services and collaboration with specialists in Sonderpädagogik. The Parents' Café, held with the special education team, offers information on ADHD, Lese- und Rechtschreibschwäche, Dyskalkulie, and media use. Individual case counseling is available to students and families to listen and find solutions. The school emphasizes inclusive practices and adapts teaching strategies to individual needs. Language support programs, a bilingual environment, and close collaboration across programs support students with special educational needs. English as an Additional Language (EAL)

The school supports English as an Additional Language through a bilingual environment and language-focused programmes. The Kindergarten is bilingual, with German- and English-speaking educators. Deutsch als Fremdsprache is offered, and the language program promotes multilingualism as a valuable competence and helps children experience language as a bridge between cultures. Deutsch als Fremdsprache is taught weekly in groups, with preschoolers receiving additional small-group sessions with the DaF coordinator; learning is play-based, using songs, games, and stories. In Grundschule, most lessons in German, Mathematics, and English are delivered through team-teaching by two teachers; children have a twice-weekly 20-minute Sprachbad to deepen language development.

Mental Wellbeing

DSN Nairobi provides health and emotional wellbeing support through an on-site clinic staffed by two qualified nurses who are available throughout the school day. The nurses have hospital experience, first-aid training, and child psychology expertise to support both physical and emotional wellbeing. A detailed health form is completed at school entry so the nursing team is informed about allergies, medications, and special health needs, enabling quick and appropriate responses. The school follows a head lice policy and collaborates with MP Shah Hospital across the street to ensure access to medical care; an ambulance is available for larger events. Regular first aid training is conducted for teachers, coaches, and students to respond safely in emergencies. The school's social work program also addresses mental health and wellbeing through theme weeks and targeted support.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding and student welfare are integrated into DSN Nairobi's practices. Admissions

Admissions

1. Online inquiry: Fill out the form (about 5 minutes; non-binding). A response is provided within 3 working days. The online inquiry collects information about the child, the desired DSN area (Kindergarten, Primary, or Secondary), and the planned start date. 2. Interview and, if needed, assessment: A personal interview is conducted; depending on the school level, a short assessment may be used to help determine the appropriate placement. 3. Admission decision: The admission decision is based on capacity, language proficiency, and pedagogical assessment. 4. Enrollment: Contract documents are issued and enrollment is completed. Prerequisites include: Kindergarten uses German or English in daily life. For Primary and Secondary, sufficient German language proficiency is required. School reports and academic records are required.

Scholarships

The German School Nairobi is offering a Scholarship Program. Since 2008, the program has enabled talented and motivated Kenyan students to pursue an education leading to the German Abitur. For the 2026 intake, applications are invited from children aged 9–10. Application period: September 1–28, 2025. Preparation: German Intensive Course, January–July 2026. Waitlist

Applications are ideally submitted by April. Placement is generally by July. If demand is high, a waitlist may be used. Siblings and children of staff are given priority in admissions decisions.
