History

The Riga French Lycee was founded on September 1, 1921 by the French government. The founder and first director was Marcel Etienne Segrest, and it was originally located at Elizabetes Street 29. In 1923 the School Council approved the motto 'For the honor of the homeland, strength, and beauty,' and the school was known for its creative atmosphere, discipline, and high teaching standards. Guest lecturers from France taught alongside Latvian teachers, and the first graduating class occurred in June 1930. During the Soviet period it was renamed Henri Barbisa Riga 11th Secondary School and from 1965 resided at Moon Street 8; it regained its historic name on June 10, 1990, moved back to its historic building at K. Valdemāra iela 48 in 2018, and celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2011 and its centennial in 2021/2022.

Community

The Riga French Lycee has a Student Council with a President, Vice-President, Secretary and ministers; The 2025/2026 roster lists Fricis Tenters as President and Keita Olīvija Nainiša as Vice-President, among other members. The School Council includes teachers and parents as well as student representatives. The school offers extracurricular groups such as folk dance (Auseklītis), choir, theater studio, Radošā studija L'art, and themed activities. The school collaborates with local and international partners to support health, safety and language projects, including the Riga City Council Welfare Department, the French Institute Latvia, ES House, Riga Stradiņa University, Junior Achievement Latvia, and the Latvian Language Agency.

The Lycée Français de Riga is a French lycee in Riga, affiliated with France through AEFE and the Institut Français, with LabelFrancÉducation recognition. It serves students aged 6–18 across two Riga campuses: Krišjāņa Valdemāra iela 48 and Moon Street 8. The school offers a general secondary program delivered in person, organized into three tracks: languages and humanities; mathematics, natural sciences and engineering; and entrepreneurship and public administration. In the languages and humanities track, Latvian language and literature, French, English, history and social sciences are studied; in the sciences track, Latvian language and literature, French, English, physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics; in the entrepreneurship track, Latvian language and literature, French, English, history, social sciences and mathematics. Latvian language and literature is emphasised alongside French and English as core languages. Founded in 1921, the school maintains its historic links to Latvia and France. Moon Street 8 houses a gym, and upgrades are planned. A digital learning ecosystem includes Uzdevumi.lv, Espace virtuel, Soma.lv and Eduspace. Extracurriculars include folk dancing, choir, theatre and the creative studio L Art, plus student civic leadership initiatives.
