The German School Kuala Lumpur (DSKL) has a rich history, having been founded in September 1978 with the establishment of the German School Association Malaysia (Deutscher Schulverein Malaysia). The school officially opened its doors on January 8, 1979, initially operating with just three students.
Over the years, due to increasing student numbers, DSKL relocated several times, eventually moving into its former long-term building in Lorong Utara B in 1996.
In February 2025, DSKL relocated to the Eurocampus KL in Mont Kiara, a shared campus with the LFKL.
The school fosters a vibrant and inclusive community, comprising the German School Society, the Parent Representative Council, and the Student Representative Council. DSKL actively encourages intercultural experiences, aiming to familiarize students with Malaysia's history, culture, and daily life. The move to the European Campus enhances this, providing a unique multicultural learning environment that embodies a European spirit and strengthens collaboration with the French school. The school calendar regularly features various projects, events, class trips, and day trips designed to engage the entire school community.
At the German School Kuala Lumpur, the Parent Representative Council (Elternbeirat) functions as the key body for parent involvement. Elected annually, this council serves as the primary voice for parents, facilitating open communication between families and the school. It actively gathers ideas, suggestions, and concerns from parents, which are then formally presented to the school management, administration, or teachers during regular meetings. The Council also addresses practical school-related matters such as school buses, lunch provisions, uniforms, and homework. With the support of parents, the Parent Representative Council actively participates in and helps organize school events and festivities, ensuring parents are well-informed through shared meeting minutes.
The German School Kuala Lumpur (DSKL) provides an education grounded in the German national curriculum, including the syllabus of the Federal State of Thuringia. Students from Kindergarten through Grade 12 can pursue recognized German qualifications like the Hauptschulabschluss, Realschulabschluss, and the German International Abitur (DIA), a university entrance qualification. The school offers a range of extracurricular activities for students from Year 3, including sports like football, badminton, and volleyball, as well as music lessons, arts and crafts (e.g., pottery), drama, and activities such as cooking and board games. A unique offering is the Guest Student Program, which provides scholarships and supervised housing for motivated students from Germany wishing to complete their Abitur or other qualifications in Kuala Lumpur. The school has recently moved into the Eurocampus KL, which they share with Lycée Français de Kuala Lumpur.
