Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

The school emphasizes Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) by integrating the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) standards into its curriculum. SEL is taught from kindergarten through high school, focusing on self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. The Pastoral Care department supports students' social, emotional, and academic growth, acting as a resource to help students process, acquire, and apply the knowledge and skills to establish and maintain healthy relationships, work toward and achieve their goals, manage their emotions, develop healthy identities, and make responsible decisions.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

OIS supports students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) through its Learning Support program. The school provides services for students with mild to moderate learning difficulties, including those with cognitive challenges. The Arrowsmith Program is utilized to address specific cognitive weaknesses, aiming to enhance students' learning capacities. The school is not a specialist SEN institution but offers targeted support to help these students succeed in the general education environment.

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

OIS offers an English Language Learning (ELL) program to support students whose first language is not English. The program focuses on developing both Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP). Instruction is provided through pull-out sessions and collaboration with content and homeroom teachers. The curriculum aligns with WIDA’s English Language Development Standards and ACTFL Standards. Additionally, the school offers an English Immersion Program for students with minimal English proficiency.

Mental Wellbeing

The school places a strong emphasis on student mental wellbeing. Each student is assigned to a "Hub," a grade-level small group that meets during a 40-minute enrichment period. These Hubs aim to proactively support students' social-emotional wellbeing through peer-to-peer and student-to-teacher relationship building. The goal is for each student to have at least one trusted friend and one trusted adult they feel comfortable talking to.

Safeguarding

OIS is committed to child protection and safeguarding. The school holds Associate Membership status with the Child Safety & Protection Network (CSPN), ensuring that its child safety policies and procedures are consistent with best practice standards adopted by CSPN . Additionally, the school has a comprehensive Child Protection Policy, which includes staff training, background checks, and clear reporting procedures to ensure a safe environment for all students.
