Following Mauritius' independence in 1968, Mrs Muriel Soobiah began teaching children in the garage of her home after HMS School closed. The school leased a colonial building on the ex-HMS grounds in Granville Avenue, Vacoas; it was originally called Alexander House, renamed Alexandra House, and formally established as a school in 1975. The move to King George V Avenue in Floréal occurred in 1993, and the school grew from 60 pupils and 6 teachers in 1991 to 100 pupils, with extensions added in 1996, 2007 and 2014. Following the retirement of Mrs Koenig in December 2025, Mrs Sangeeta Nyapati took over as Headmistress in January 2026.
The school has a truly international flavour with pupils and staff from many countries, including Australia, Canada, England, Mauritius, the United States among others. Parental involvement is encouraged; a Parent Day is held each term for parents to visit the school to see the work and discuss progress with the teachers. Parents may share their talents by helping to run after‑school activity clubs and assist with class outings and school functions such as Sports Day, the School Fete and the annual School Play.
