Language Provision

Language learning opportunities and multilingual education

Language Provision

French is the primary language of instruction with a strong emphasis on French literacy. English is taught as a second language, supported by the British International Section and PARLE language tracks. The Creole language is highlighted periodically during cultural events. Approximately 10% of students have a mother tongue other than French, and more than 30% of students speak more than two languages at home.

Bilingual Teaching

Two languages are taught at the primary level: French is the language of instruction, and English is taught as the second language. A British International Section provides English-language instruction in designated grades; the section was opened in 2022/2023 for PS, MS and CM2, and expanded in 2023/2024 to PS, MS, GS, CM1 and CM2. This reflects a bilingual approach within a French-curriculum school. This approach aligns with the AEFE framework for language education.

Immersion Programs

British International Section offers English-language instruction in specific grades. English language learning is integrated across sections through the PARLE language tracks to strengthen multilingual competencies.

École Paul et Virginie is a private, nonprofit French-language preschool and primary school located in Tamarin on Mauritius' southwest coast, within the Smart et Happy Village Cap Tamarin. It serves children from Petite Section (nursery) through CM2 (Grade 5), welcoming ages roughly 3 to 11. The school follows the French curriculum and is homologated by the French Ministry of Education and Youth as a French overseas teaching establishment, and it is part of the AEFE network. It operates as a nonprofit funded by tuition fees and donations, guided by a volunteer management committee. Language learning is a central focus, with reinforced foreign-language study from the start of primary and opportunities to practice English in clubs. The environment uses differentiated pedagogy to support each learner's progress and to foster a love of learning. Extracurricular activities, holiday centres and daycare complement academics and contribute to a caring, community-oriented school experience.
