Wellbeing and Support

How students are nurtured, understood, and kept safe

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

Brookstone School is committed to the social, emotional, and physical well-being of students and faculty. The school has dedicated counselors working directly with students in all divisions and a full‑time nurse serving the entire school. The Counseling Department provides programs for parents, students, and faculty to learn, strategize, and develop a sense of shared community, and the school hosts speakers each year to inform and inspire the community. Wellness in 90 Videos offers quick, 90‑second insights on various wellness topics for students and parents. Counseling services include Individual Counseling, Student Psychoeducation, Group Counseling, and Parent Psychoeducation, with additional support resources for parents such as speaker topics and Hatch Joy Parent Resilience Training. The school's counseling team includes Jacob Crowder (Director of Wellness) for the Upper School, Haley Champion (3K–5th Grade Counselor), and Jenni Lowell (Middle School Counselor). The Spring Community Read is a school event that engages the community in literacy and dialogue.

Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Brookstone recognizes and celebrates learning differences, emphasizing that learning styles are as unique as each child. The Cheves Family Learning Center focuses on Learning Differences by providing heightened awareness, early intervention, remediation, and ongoing support for both students and families. Accommodations Policy and Procedures and Documentation and Paperwork Policy guide how support is implemented and documented. Brookstone notes that approximately 25% of school‑age children have ADD/ADHD or reading disorders and about 15–20% have dyslexia, underscoring the need for individualized supports. The Learning Center offers accommodations and targeted remediation to help students develop their strengths and meet their learning goals.

Mental Wellbeing

Brookstone emphasizes the social, emotional, and physical well‑being of students and faculty, with a strong counseling program that serves 3K–12 and a dedicated clinic presence through the Student Life team. Counseling services cover individual, group, and psychoeducational formats for students and families, and there are resources for parents, including speaker topics and resilience programming (e.g., Hatch Joy). Wellness in 90 Videos provide succinct, practical wellness tips for quick learning and habit formation, aimed at both students and parents. The school hosts regular programming and speakers on topics related to mental health, anxiety, addiction, and coping strategies to support overall mental wellbeing.

Safeguarding

Brookstone maintains Harassment Policies that affirm bullying, harassment, and hazing will not be tolerated and that the school will educate the community about these behaviors. Anyone who feels bullied or harassed should report to the appropriate school official, and inappropriate behaviors are disciplined accordingly. Harassment includes actions based on race, color, sex, national origin, religion, age, or disability, and Brookstone strives to maintain an environment free of harassment. Hazing is not tolerated and students or witnesses should report such conduct to a Principal or counselor. The Sexual Harassment Policy requires reporting to the Principal, Headmaster, or business manager, with provisions ensuring proper reporting and investigation. These safeguarding policies are described in the Brookstone Family Handbook.
