Hillcrest School was founded in 1942 to provide a Christian education for missionary children by the Church of the Brethren Mission. It began with 12 pupils taught by Mary Dadison; the school moved to its current Jos location in 1946 after wartime delays, and textbooks arrived in May 1943. The school started as an elementary school with high school studies by correspondence, and the first high school graduating class occurred in 1965. The Board of Governors includes multiple missions and organizations—Assemblies of God Mission (AGM), Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), Ekklesiyar Yan'uwa a Nigeria (EYN), Lutheran Church of Nigeria (LCN), Mission Africa (MA), Servants United Mission (SUM), Serving in Mission (SIM), Summer Institute of Linguistics Nigeria LTD/GTE, and United Methodist Church in Nigeria (UMCN)—reflecting its international character; there are also parent and alumni representatives. The international character remains a core value with local Jos enrollment and growing interest in boarding from across Nigeria.
Community life at Hillcrest is active through Student Life and school events. StuCo plans and carries out projects to maintain and improve the student body, the school's facilities, and services to the greater Jos community. The calendar includes events such as Eid-el-Fitr holidays (No School) and a StuCo Movie Night, along with P/T Virtual Conferences.
The PTA is a Parent Teacher Association composed of parents and teachers of Hillcrest School. Its objectives are: to open, encourage, and maintain communications between the parents and teachers of Hillcrest School. In order to do this, it arranges its programs in a way that parents and teachers will feel free to exchange ideas and viewpoints on education and other related items. It attempts to continue the education of both parents and teachers. In order to help the staff and parents to be aware of trends and new findings in child development, in education and in various academic and social fields, the PTA tries to arrange for qualified speakers to present lectures and lead discussion groups. It also provides an opportunity for parents and teachers to get to know each other in an informal way.
